Systemwide Digital Credentials Pilot Program

The CSU Systemwide Digital Credentials pilot is a systemwide initiative designed to integrate industry-recognized digital credentials into faculty professional development and student learning experiences across the California State University (CSU) system. Utilizing a set of Grow with Google course licenses, this initiative aims to enhance workforce readiness by embedding digital credentials into academic and co-curricular pathways. The rollout will be structured in three phases spanning from Summer 2025 to Spring 2028.

Phase 1: Faculty Professional Development & Student Intersegmental Course

(Summer 2025 – Spring 2026)

• Embed the Grow with Google courses into faculty professional development programs offered in the systemwide instance of Canvas that is accessible to faculty across the 22 university system.
• Pilot an intersegmental student program involving students from the California Community College (CCC), California State University (CSU), and University of California (UC) systems to explore credentialing pathways across California's higher education systems.
• Anticipated Outcome: Establish a baseline framework for credential integration, evaluate faculty and student engagement, and gather preliminary feedback on the effectiveness of digital credentials in professional development and student learning.

Phase 2: Faculty Training & Academic Course Integration

(Summer 2026 – Spring 2027)

• Develop and launch the Digital Credentials Mini-Course Series for University Faculty, a four-course online professional development pathway to support faculty in incorporating industry-recognized credentials into their academic courses.
• Conduct a academic course pilot at with 3 CSU universities, working with 3 faculty members to integrate Google courses/certifications into 1 course each.
• Anticipated Outcome: Provide CSU faculty with structured training on embedding digital credentials into curricula, and gather preliminary feedback on the effectiveness of embedding digital credentials into existing academic courses and student learning.

Phase 3: CSU Digital Credentials

(Summer 2027 – Spring 2028)

• Pilot launch "CSU Digital Credentials," a systemwide initiative that ensures CSU graduates have access to industry-recognized credentials that complement their degree programs, enhancing employability and workforce readiness.
• Anticipated Outcome: Establish a sustainable and scalable model for integrating industry-valued credentials into CSU degree programs, positioning CSU as a leader in workforce-aligned higher education and increasing student employability post-graduation.
