Family Nurse Practitioner M.S.

The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program educates advanced practice nurses to practice primary care. This includes health promotion, health maintenance, disease prevention, and diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illness, in a variety of settings throughout the patient's lifecycle.

Program Overview

The program is for professional nurses who hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or a M.S. in Nursing. The FNP program is designed to help students grow as future family nurse practitioners and succeed in their career after graduation.

What Is a Family Nurse Practitioner?

An FNP is an advanced practice registered nurse who can provide family-focused health services to patients ranging from infants to seniors. As an FNP, students will have the skills to provide many different care services, such as performing physical exams, prescribing medications, treating illnesses, and maintaining patient records.

How to Become a Family Nurse Practitioner

To become a family nurse practitioner, follow these steps:

1. Obtain a Bachelor's in Nursing
2. Pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) and Receive an RN License
3. Enroll in a Graduate Program
4. Pass the National FNP Certification Board Exam and Apply for Your NP License

Admissions Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Nursing or a M.S. degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university
• Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
• GPA of 3.0 or above is required
• Copy of currently registered and unencumbered New York State RN License
• Professional résumé
• Personal statement (500 words)

The baccalaureate degree program in nursing and master's degree program in nursing at Mercy University is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
