Introduction to the Aviation Maintenance Technology Program

The Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) Program is an intensive evening program that can be completed while working during the day. Classes are scheduled in 18-week blocks, five days a week from 3:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. (holidays excluded). The coursework can be completed in two years as a full-time student, or students can attend part-time and take courses as their personal schedule allows.

What You Will Learn

  • You will learn how to inspect and maintain aircraft to ensure that the plane will fly safely.
  • You will learn theory and practical experience in constructing aircraft.
  • You will gain hands-on experience and develop the skills needed to repair aircraft.

Career Opportunities

You will be eligible to sit for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) licensing exams. Passing the coursework and the appropriate exams will qualify you for an Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic License. Career options include:

  • Aviation Mechanic or Technician
  • Aircraft Engineer
  • Working in the aerospace field, perhaps on satellites
  • Working in aviation-related fields on aircraft parts and services, and aircraft development
  • Working in other industries, maintaining and preparing cars, trucks, elevators, and light rails
  • Students may also continue their studies in Aviation Maintenance Technology and transfer to a 4-year college or university. All credits earned in the AMT program at College of Alameda are transferable to any state university and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Degrees & Certificates

Airframe AS Degree

The Airframe AS degree is a specialized program designed to train students in the inspection, repair, overhaul, and maintenance of aircraft airframe structures and systems.

Powerplant AS Degree

The Powerplant AS degree program trains students in the inspection, maintenance, overhaul, and repair of aircraft powerplant systems (i.e., engines and associated components).

Airframe Certificate of Achievement

The Airframe Certificate of Achievement program is designed to prepare students for the airframe portion of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) mechanic licensing exam.

Powerplant Certificate of Achievement

This certificate focuses on the powerplant portion of the aviation maintenance technician training. Students learn theory and practical skills related to aircraft engines, their systems (fuel, induction, lubrication, ignition, turbine, etc.), and maintenance overhauls.
