Introduction to Advanced Materials Science (Energy Storage) MSc

The Advanced Materials Science (Energy Storage) MSc programme is designed to equip students with advanced, comprehensive knowledge of materials science and related state-of-the-art technologies. This interdisciplinary programme combines frontline research-based teaching from across UCL to train the next generation of materials scientists for sustainable energy and energy storage.

About the Programme

The programme relates scientific theories to research and applications of advanced materials, encourages innovation and creative thinking, and contextualises scientific innovation within the global market and entrepreneurship. It is delivered by UCL's Institute for Materials Discovery (IMD) within the Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences.

Who is the Programme For?

This programme is designed for those with a background in physics, chemistry, polymers, materials science and engineering, or biotechnology. It prepares students for a career discovering the advanced materials for energy conversion and storage that will shape the future of our world.

What the Programme Will Give You

Students on this programme will benefit from UCL's emphasis on research-based learning and teaching, and research input from departments across UCL in mathematical and physical sciences, and in engineering. The programme will deliver innovative teaching, from group design projects to modules like Materials Innovation for Renewable Energy.

Career Prospects

Graduates from this programme progress into a wide range of sectors, including aerospace, biomedical research, advanced manufacturing, and other multidisciplinary industries. Employer examples include Shell, Johnson Matthey, Rolls-Royce, Merck, Oxford Instruments, Huawei, Bytedance, Procter & Gamble, and Coca-Cola.

Employability

The programme provides an excellent foundation for further academic study, such as another postgraduate degree or doctoral research. Graduates have gone on to be awarded full PhD studentships at top universities worldwide.

Networking Opportunities

Staff at UCL IMD have extensive professional networks and often organize research seminar talks given by internal and external academic and industrial speakers worldwide. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in these scientific seminars and organize their own academic, social, and alumni events.

Teaching and Learning

The programme introduces students to the area of advanced material science through a blended mixture of lectures, case-study workshops, individual and group activities, and lab practices. Assessment methods vary according to modules and are designed to enable students to demonstrate learning over time.

Modules

  • Microstructural Control in Advanced Materials
  • Materials Design, Selection and Discovery
  • Materials Innovation for Renewable Energy
  • Advanced Materials Characterisation
  • Advanced Energy Storage
  • Advanced Materials Processing and Manufacturing
  • Research Methodology
