French and Spanish BA

The French and Spanish BA program at University College London (UCL) is designed to equip students with near-native French language skills and fluent Spanish language skills, preparing them for future careers in countries and companies across the world. The program includes a Year Abroad, which immerses students in the cultures and societies of both languages.

Entry Requirements

A Levels

  • Grades: AAB
  • Subjects: French and Spanish required at grade A.

  • Scottish Advanced Highers: A, A, B at Advanced Highers (or A, A at Advanced Higher and B, B, B at Higher), with French and Spanish at grade A required at Advanced Higher.

Course Overview

The French and Spanish BA program offers expert teaching and learning in both language acquisition and intercultural contexts, equipping students to thrive in today's global society. Over the four years, students will deepen their knowledge of the French and Spanish languages while developing valuable skills in cultural literacy and critical thinking.


Year Abroad

Students will spend their third year abroad, split between countries where French and Spanish are spoken. They may spend the term studying at a partner university or on an approved work placement.

Teaching and Learning

Modules

Students will take a number of individual modules, normally valued at 15 or 30 credits, adding up to a total of 120 credits for the year. Modules are assessed in the academic year in which they are taken.

Assessment

Modules are assessed by a mixture of written examinations, essays, and other forms of coursework. Language modules will also include an oral examination. Some group work may be assessed. In the final year, students may have the option to undertake a research essay on a topic chosen by them with guidance from their tutor.
