Mathematical Statistics - Master Programme

The Mathematical Statistics - Master Programme is a 2-year, 120-credit program that delves into the fascinating world of probability and chance. The entire program is taught in English, providing students with solid skills in probability theory, statistical theory, and methodology.

Overview

This Master's program gives students the opportunity to acquire a deep understanding of mathematical statistics and its applications in various fields, including biology, medicine, environment, climate, risk management, and economics. Students will learn different methods enabling the application of mathematical statistics in these fields, such as analyzing genetic links to congenital diseases or modeling the impact of climate change on extreme weather events.

Teaching and Learning

The program requires students to study at least 45 second-cycle credits in mathematical statistics and complete a degree project worth 30 credits. Students can choose the remaining 45 credits as courses in mathematics and numerical analysis or other subjects, including computer science. The degree project consists of a small-scale independent research or development assignment based on current research, which can be linked to ongoing projects at the department or research issues in the subject area at companies or other departments.

Career Prospects

With a Master's degree in mathematical statistics, students have vast opportunities to shape an exciting future career. The program meets the requirements for research studies, and statistical expertise is in high demand in various industries, including pharmaceutical, biotechnology, insurance, banking, and finance. According to a report by SACO, the labor market for mathematicians/statisticians is characterized by low competition for jobs, and this situation is not expected to change over the next five years.

Dates

The program starts on August 31, 2026, and ends on June 4, 2028. The application period is closed for the Autumn Semester 2026.

Requirements and Selection

The prerequisites for the program include a Bachelor's degree of at least 180 credits or the equivalent, with at least 90 credits in mathematics, mathematical statistics, numerical analysis, scientific calculations, and computer science. The selection criteria are based on grades awarded for previous academic courses in science, mathematics, and engineering.

Tuition Fees

Citizens of countries outside the European Union, European Economic Area, and Switzerland are required to pay tuition fees, which amount to SEK 370,000 for the full program. The first payment is SEK 92,500.

Scholarships and Funding

Lund University offers various scholarships and funding options, including the Lund University Global Scholarship Programme, African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) Scholarship, Swedish Institute Scholarship, and country-specific scholarships. External scholarships are also available.

  • Lund University Global Scholarship Programme: a merit-based and selective scholarship targeted at top academic students from countries outside the EU/EEA.
  • African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) Scholarship: targeted at top academic students from selected African research universities.
  • Swedish Institute Scholarship: offers scholarships to international students from certain countries who are applying for select Master's programs in Sweden.
  • Country-specific scholarships: Lund University has agreements with scholarship organizations and funding bodies in different countries, which may allow applicants to apply for funding or scholarships in their home countries.
  • External scholarships: various organizations provide financial support for international students from specific countries.
