I-CAAN Scholars Program

The I-CAAN Scholars Program is a scholarship and student success initiative funded by the National Science Foundation's Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (NSF S-STEM) program. The program provides financial assistance and supportive programming to foster the educational and career success of academically talented, economically-disadvantaged students enrolled in a baccalaureate degree program in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science at Lawrence Technological University.


Program Overview

The I-CAAN program provides financial assistance and supportive programming to foster the educational and career success of academically talented, economically-disadvantaged students. The program offers a range of activities and services, including:


  • I-CAAN Scholarship: $15,000 in tuition support per year, for a total of $60,000 across a 4-year course of study
  • I-CAAN Summer Bridge Program: a week-long program to prepare scholars for their upcoming classes and build camaraderie within the I-CAAN cohort
  • Living-Learning Community: a residence hall community to build social connectedness and promote academic success
  • Mentor Meals: monthly group meals to foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie amongst I-CAAN scholars and their faculty mentors
  • My STEM Story Seminar Series: a seminar series to cultivate a sense of belonging and encourage growth through the universal experience of storytelling
  • Success Stories Career Panel and Alumni Networking Events: biannual events to prepare I-CAAN scholars for their transition to employment or graduate school
  • Blue Devil Bucks: a program to incentivize I-CAAN scholars to participate in student support programs

Eligibility

To be eligible for the I-CAAN program, students must meet the following requirements:


  • Citizenship: U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Academic Talent: high school GPA of 2.75 or higher
  • Financial Need: meet Pell eligibility requirements and have demonstrated unmet financial need
  • First-Year, Full-Time LTU Undergraduate Student: entering LTU as a first-year, full-time student in Fall 2026 or Fall 2027 semesters
  • Major: declare one of the following majors in their initial LTU application:
    • Bachelor of Science in Biology
    • Bachelor of Science in Chemistry
    • Bachelor of Science in Physics
    • Bachelor of Science in Physics + Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Sciences Dual Major
    • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science
    • Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Sciences
    • Bachelor of Science in Data Science

Application Process

The application process for the I-CAAN program involves the following steps:


  1. Apply to LTU via the general LTU application
  2. Complete the FAFSA to determine eligibility
  3. Apply to the I-CAAN Scholars Program via a secondary application
  4. Submit two short essay prompts and identify two teachers or mentors to provide recommendations
  5. Participate in a phone interview with the I-CAAN leadership team
  6. Receive notification of acceptance into the I-CAAN program
