Introduction to the Indigenous Nursing Entry Program

The Indigenous Nursing Entry Program (INEP) is an eight-month program designed for students of First Nations (status or non-status), Métis, or Inuit people who do not meet the regular or mature student entry requirements for the Bachelor of Science, Nursing (BScN) program at Lakehead University. The program aims to provide the necessary skills and academic preparation for successful transition into Nursing studies.


Program Details

  • The INEP is intended for students who do not meet the regular admission criteria for the BScN program.
  • Successful completion of the INEP (with a minimum 70% average) ensures eligibility for admission to the Bachelor of Science Nursing degree program at Lakehead University.
  • Students who attain an overall average of 80% or higher are eligible for the 3-year compressed BScN program.

Admission Requirements

  • Applicants must be First Nations (status or non-status), Métis, or Inuit.
  • Recent high school graduates or mature students who do not meet the School of Nursing BScN required admission criteria are eligible.
  • Fluency in English is required for participation in the program.
  • Senior Chemistry and Math courses are strongly recommended prior to attending this program.

Application Process

  • The application package includes an application form, personal statement, two personal references, resume, and transcripts from high school and post-secondary institutions attended.
  • There is no cost to apply.
  • Applications can be submitted directly to the Indigenous Access Programs Coordinator by email or fax.

Program Structure

  • The program includes four academic preparation courses:
    • English (ENGL 1012, ENGL 1015)
    • Chemistry (CHEM 1050, CHEM 1070)
    • Mathematics (MATH 0212)
    • Biology (NURS 1120)
  • Four skills-based courses are also included:
    • Communications (NURS 1110)
    • Professional Orientation (NURS 1130)
    • Study Skills and Critical Thinking (UNIV 1016)

  • The tuition and fees for the program vary by year and student status (Canadian, international, etc.).
  • Detailed fee schedules are provided for different categories of students, including those for the Thunder Bay and Orillia campuses.

Campus and Faculty

  • The program is offered at the Thunder Bay campus.
  • The faculty responsible for the program is the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences.
