Introduction to the History Editorial Internship
The History Editorial Internship is a twelve-week program offered by W. W. Norton & Company, a renowned independent and employee-owned publishing house. Founded in 1923, Norton has been dedicated to publishing high-quality works, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, textbooks, and digital learning tools.
About the Internship
The internship provides participants with an engaging, supportive, and hands-on learning experience in publishing. Interns will work with the College History team and may be involved in various tasks, including:
- Assisting with the preparation and review of chapter manuscripts for college history textbooks
- Reviewing and identifying errors in chapters during manuscript and production stages
- Organizing and updating images and maps in art logs and art manuscripts for new editions
- Preparing permission forms for primary source materials to be reprinted in texts
- Assisting with digital media resources for InQuizitive, Norton's award-winning adaptive learning tool
- Reviewing, editing, and formatting digital documents, eBook interactives, lecture PowerPoints, instructor's manuals, and test banks
- Cataloging and organizing digital assets, including videos, flashcards, and primary source documents
- Analyzing data from professor review programs and drafting memos on survey results
- Day-to-day office duties, file retrieval, and other miscellaneous administrative tasks
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for the History Editorial Internship is:
- Curious, hardworking, and eager to learn more about the different facets of publishing
- Interested in a career in textbook publishing
- Demonstrates a passion for history and digital humanities
- Eager to improve verbal and written communication skills
- Enjoys collaborating and working in a group to solve challenges
- Has a working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Enjoys detail-oriented work
- Is a college junior, senior, recent graduate, or someone looking to make a career change
Internship Details
- Interns are paid $17 per hour, subject to applicable law, and work a maximum of 20 hours weekly
- The internship period is twelve weeks, from June 1, 2026, to August 21, 2026
- The workday is 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time, with flexible hours to accommodate an intern's schedule
- For interns who reside within commuting distance of the office, the internship will be in-person in Manhattan offices; those in other locations will work remotely
- Eligibility to work with W. W. Norton & Company in the U.S. is required
- Norton is unable to hire interns who are residents of Alaska, South Dakota, or West Virginia
