Program Overview
Marshall University's Herd Academy is designed for high school students to take college courses, either online or as dual credit courses. The program allows students to get a head start on their college education and earn transferable credits.
Eligibility and Requirements
- High school students can participate in the program, with recommendations for juniors and seniors to apply.
- Talented freshmen and sophomores can also apply, provided they meet the Early Admission requirements.
- Students must consider their personal schedules, extracurricular activities, and school schedule before committing to online or dual credit courses.
- Typically, high school students should not take more than two college courses per term.
Course Structure and Duration
- Marshall University courses run as 14- or 15-week semesters during the fall and spring terms.
- Summer terms vary in length.

Registration and Enrollment
- Accepted high school students review the available online course list and complete a registration request form for online courses.
- For dual credit courses, students talk to their high school counselor about options and enrollment.

Cost and Payment
- Enrollment deposits are not required for online college courses or dual credit courses for high school students.
- The fee for tuition is reduced to $25 per credit hour for online and dual credit courses.
- High school students taking dual enrollment online courses or on-campus courses make payment directly to the Office of the Bursar at Marshall University.
- Dual credit courses in high schools are paid directly to the student's high school.
Technology Requirements
- Students need a desktop or laptop computer with a Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox browser.
- Access to high-speed internet is required, with a wired connection preferred.
- A webcam, mic, and headset or earbuds are necessary.
- Students have access to Microsoft Office software through the Office 365 suite of tools.
Transcript Information
- Transcripts include a list of all courses taken at Marshall University, the term in which they were taken, and grades.
- Students can order transcripts through their myMU portal or the Office of the Registrar.
Transferability of Credits
- Marshall University is a regionally accredited university, and all university courses are transferable.
- However, acceptance of a college transfer depends on the university or college the student plans to attend.
- Each institution has its own criteria for determining transfer equivalencies.
FERPA and Proxy Information
- The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) ensures students have certain rights regarding their educational records.
- Students can give permission to parents or others to view their records by setting up a proxy through the MyMU system.
- A proxy can access the student's academic records and speak with university representatives about the student.
