French (B.A.) Program

The French (B.A.) program at Nebraska Wesleyan University requires a minimum of 35-36 credit hours to complete. The program is designed to build upon basic language concepts acquired in introductory-level courses, expand cultural knowledge, and increase confidence while enhancing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in French.

Program Requirements

To complete the major, students must complete:

• 24 hours beyond stage 4
• At least one 3-credit literature course
• The 2-hour ML Senior Capstone
• At least 12 hours earned in a semester abroad in the language of the major
• A minimum of 8 credit hours must be earned at the upper level

Study Abroad Experience

Students majoring in French are required to incorporate a study abroad experience of a minimum of one semester (12 credit hours) in the language of their major. No more than 16 hours of upper-level French credits from a semester abroad may be applied toward the French major (24 credits for two semesters). In conjunction with the semester abroad, students must complete:

• Either GS110 or GS120 (1 credit)
• ML291 (0-1 credit)
• Following study abroad, a major needs to complete an additional 4 hours of upper-level coursework in residence at Nebraska Wesleyan, plus the 2-hour senior capstone

Retroactive Credit

Students who begin their college language study beyond Stage 3 of a language, either as a result of testing or upon consultation with the chair, and who complete a course at that level with a grade of "B" or better, may earn up to 8 hours of retroactive credit for FRNCH 101 and FRNCH 102. Students who have previously taken a beginning level of a college language (Stage I and/or Stage II) are not eligible for this retroactive credit.

• FRNCH 101 French: Stage III (4 hours)
• FRNCH 102 French: Stage IV (4 hours)
• French beyond 102 (must include at least 3 hours of literature and 8 hours at upper-level) (24 hours)
• One course chosen from:
  • GLST 010 Preparing for Education Abroad (1 hour)
  • GLST 020 Global Studies: Processing the International Experience (1 hour)
• MLANG 291 Engaging in Study Abroad (0-1 hour)
• MLANG 298 Senior Capstone (2 hours)

Course Descriptions

FRNCH 101 French: Stage III

French 101/102 are a two-part sequence of intermediate-level French, designed to build upon basic language concepts acquired in introductory-level courses, expand cultural knowledge, and increase confidence while enhancing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in French. Prerequisite: French Stage 2 (FRNCH 002) or equivalent.

FRNCH 102 French: Stage IV

French 101/102 are a two-part sequence of intermediate-level French, designed to build upon basic language concepts acquired in introductory-level courses, expand cultural knowledge, and increase confidence while enhancing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in French. Prerequisite: French Stage 2 (FRNCH 002) or equivalent.

GLST 010 Preparing for Education Abroad

This course will prepare students who are considering going abroad for study, work, or volunteer/service learning by investigating the many facets of facing life in another culture. Topics to be covered include practical travel information, intercultural communication, cross-cultural value systems, foreign academic systems, and cultural self-awareness. This course will give students the tools to make their experience more successful and rewarding. The course is designed for both the student who has already applied for a program and for the student just beginning to explore the idea of going abroad. Pass/Fail only.

GLST 020 Global Studies: Processing the International Experience

This class is for students who have successfully completed a semester or year of study abroad and who would like to process that experience further by analyzing specific cultural and educational experiences and interacting with students who have had similar experiences abroad. Pass/Fail only.

MLANG 291 Engaging in Study Abroad

This course is designed to prepare students for the challenges and opportunities that are unique to language-learning abroad, to engage students in meaningful activities while abroad, to maintain a connection with students while abroad, and to foster continued development of skills and knowledge following the study abroad period. Students will be introduced to specific strategies in language and culture learning in the target culture to help students achieve an experience in the host culture that is meaningful and productive. Prerequisite: Permission of Department.

MLANG 298 Senior Capstone

This course is a senior-level research and writing seminar that serves to provide instruction and guidance to Modern Language majors as they complete their culminating senior research project/internship experience, providing them practice in reflective, academic, and analytical writing and guidance in project planning. In this course, students produce their chosen senior project, which may be an internship project, a research paper of approximately 20 pages, or a creative work supplemented with a critical essay. Students will evaluate existing literature relevant to their topics, develop annotated bibliographies, build background vocabulary in their target language, and carry out their final project. Small group collaboration and peer editing will be emphasized, with students working toward the development of critical reading skills and growing level of independence in their writing. Course will be taught in English.
