Speech-Language Pathology (M.S.) Program

The Speech-Language Pathology (M.S.) program at Towson University provides a perfect balance of solid academic coursework and practical clinical training experience. This strong curriculum leads to high passing rates on the National Praxis Examination in Speech-Language Pathology.


Program Overview

The program is designed to be completed in two years, with first-year classes scheduled around on-campus practicum and second-year classes offered at times that allow students to participate in off-campus practicum during daytime hours.


Admission Requirements

  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.00 (on a 4-point scale) overall, in the major coursework, and in the last 60 credits of study is required for consideration for admission to the program.
  • Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in speech-language pathology/audiology or communication disorders from a regionally accredited college or university, or have a bachelor's degree in an alternate field with completion of specific prerequisite coursework.
  • Prerequisite coursework includes:
    • Biological Sciences (human/animal focused)
    • Physical Sciences (chemistry or physics)
    • Statistics
    • Social/Behavioral Sciences (psychology, sociology, anthropology, etc.)
  • Students with degrees in different fields may complete a second bachelor's degree in speech-language pathology and audiology/communication disorders or complete prerequisite coursework in communication disorders.

Application Requirements

  • Complete the CSDCAS application with official transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement/essay.
  • Submit the Towson University supplemental online application.
  • International applicants must meet additional requirements, including a TOEFL IBT score of 100.

Clinical Practicum

  • Students need to complete 400 hours of clinical practicum to graduate and apply for certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
  • Twenty-five of these hours are observation hours, which must be completed before practicum begins with clients.
  • Students complete clinical practicum at the Speech and Language Center on campus during the first year and off campus during the second year.
  • Off-campus practicum settings include public and private schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and private practices.

Tuition and Fees

  • The cost per credit is $739 (in-state tuition and fees).
  • Additional fees include:
    • Typhon Clinical Hours Documentation: $100
    • Clinic Name Tag: $15
    • Modified Barium Swallow Virtual Training: $79
    • Stipend for Off-Campus Clinical Supervisors: $240/semester
    • Placement-dependent fees, such as CastleBranch Criminal Background and Drug Screen: $60-$85
    • CPR Training: $15
    • Parking/Tolls/Gas: varies with placement

Accreditation

The Master's of Science (M.S.) education program in Speech-Language Pathology at Towson University is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
