Studio Art (M.F.A.) Program

The Studio Art (M.F.A.) program at Towson University is designed to take your conceptual and technical artistic skills to the next level in the production of art and design work. This multidisciplinary environment offers individualized mentorship, training for careers in galleries, museums, art criticism, and college-level instruction.

Program Overview

The program requires a minimum of 60 credits to graduate and can be completed in 3 years with a full-time course load. Students can choose from various areas of concentration, including:

• Ceramics
• Digital Art
• Graphic Design
• Illustration
• Jewelry & Metals
• Painting & Drawing
• Photography
• Printmaking
• Sculpture

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• A baccalaureate degree, preferably in art, from a regionally accredited college or university
• A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.00 (on a 4-point scale) for full admission, and 2.75 for conditional admission
• No GRE scores are required

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit:

• An online application and application fee
• Official transcripts
• 2 letters of recommendation
• A portfolio of 15-20 images or a maximum of 15 minutes of video or animation through Slideroom.com
• A statement of purpose describing artistic or design practice, current influences, and goals for the MFA Studio Arts program
• A current professional resume

Additional Requirements for International Applicants

International applicants must comply with U.S. Immigration requirements, including full-time enrollment with the majority of classes taken in-person and on campus. They must also provide required credential evaluations and demonstrate English-language proficiency.

Program Completion

To graduate, students need to complete 60 credits. The program can be completed in 3 years with a full-time course load, following a structured plan:

• Year 1: 12 credits (Fall), 9 credits (Spring)
• Year 2: 12 credits (Fall), 9 credits (Spring)
• Year 3: 9 credits (Fall), 9 credits (Spring)

Tuition and Fees

The cost per credit is $739 (in-state tuition and fees).

Graduate Assistantships

Full-time students are eligible to receive graduate assistantships, which are awarded by the graduate program director.
