Modern Languages and Cultures, Bachelor of Arts (BA) - Concentration in Professional French

The Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages and Cultures with a concentration in Professional French is a comprehensive program designed to provide students with a deep understanding of the French language and culture. This program is effective as of Fall 2019.

Program Learning Outcomes

The program is designed to achieve the following learning outcomes:

• Communication: Communicate in a language other than English.
  • Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  • Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics.
  • Standard 1.3: Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics.
• Communities: Participate in multilingual communities at home and around the world.
  • Standard 5.1: Students use the language both within and beyond the school setting.
  • Standard 5.2: Students show evidence of becoming life-long learners by using the language for personal enjoyment and enrichment.
• Comparisons: Develop insight into the nature of language and culture.
  • Standard 4.1: Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of the language studied and their own.
  • Standard 4.2: Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and their own.
• Connections: Connect with other disciplines and acquire information.
  • Standard 3.1: Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the foreign language.
  • Standard 3.2: Students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through the foreign language and its cultures.
• Cultures: Gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures.
  • Standard 2.1: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the culture studied.
  • Standard 2.2: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the culture studied.

• Major GPA: 2.0 or higher
• Overall GPA: 2.0 or higher

Summary

The program requires a minimum of 120 credits. Some courses meet multiple requirements but are only counted once toward the 120 credit total required to graduate.

BA Modern Language Requirement

The BA degree requires language proficiency at the 103 class level. Exemption by placement or examination is possible.

Basic Math Requirement

Check with your adviser or a current degree audit report to see if you have been exempted from this course.

Computer Competency

Demonstrate "computer competency" by passing the Computer Competency Exam or selecting one of the following courses: Introduction to Computing for Liberal Arts, Computer Concepts, Introduction to Computing and Programming, or Technology for Wellness.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Requirement

Students must take and pass a course with the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) designation prior to graduation.

Major/Concentration Requirements

• 15 major credits must be taken at SRU or PASSHE
• 15 major credits must be taken at the 300 level or above
• Basic Skill Courses: French Language and Culture II, French Language and Culture III, French Conversation 1, Reading in French
• Required French Courses: French Grammar and Composition 1, French Conversation 2, Professional French, France through the Ages or France and Francophone Identities Today, French Linguistics and Phonetics
• French Electives 300 level and above

Additional Requirements

• Student must complete a Minor or Major or Certificate in any other discipline
• Capstone Experience requirement: Internship Presentation, Study Abroad Presentation, or Research Presentation

The department of Modern Languages encourages students to engage in international study programs, High-Impact Practice (HIP) designated classes, student-faculty research, student leadership development, service-learning classes, career education and development, internships, field experiences, and volunteering.
