German 1 Course Details

Course Overview

The German 1 course is designed to introduce students to the basics of the German language. The course is organized by the University of Eastern Finland and is taught in English.


Course Description

In this course, students will learn how to pronounce German and use basic greetings and introductions. They will also learn to communicate in simple everyday situations.


Course Contents

The course consists of three modules:


  • Getting to know each other / Kennenlernen
  • In the student cafeteria / In der Mensa
  • Studies / Studium The course covers vocabulary including numbers, greetings, time, weekdays, months, seasons, food, and drink. Grammar topics include verb conjugation in the present tense, personal pronouns, question words, and the use of definite and indefinite articles.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:


  • Communicate in various everyday situations
  • Write simple messages
  • Understand culture and everyday life in German-speaking Europe
  • Talk about their country in German

All course materials are available in a digital learning environment.


Teaching and Evaluation Methods

The course assessment consists of actively completed assignments, active participation in webinars, and passed assignments. The total course grade is based on final assignment points and module-based returned assignments.


Grading Scale and Evaluation Criteria

The course uses a pass/fail or 0-5 grading scale, depending on the implementation. To achieve the lowest grade, students must obtain at least 50% of the points, while grade 3 requires at least 70%, and grade 5 requires at least 90%.


Amount of Work

The course requires 81 hours of work, with one credit corresponding to 27 hours of student work.


Enrollment

Enrollment for the course takes place from December 1st to January 11th.
