Mathematics Program

The mathematics program at Waring School is designed to empower students to reason quantitatively, make effective mathematical arguments, solve challenging problems, and represent math ideas in multiple ways. The program aims to provide students with a strong foundation in algebraic thinking, problem-solving, and collaborative learning.

Program Overview

The mathematics program is structured to give students a strong base in algebraic thinking that is engaging and age-appropriate. The program uses small classes, problem-solving, and collaborative learning to help students construct long-lasting understanding of math ideas. Technology, such as graphing calculators, Desmos, spreadsheets, and Scratch, is used to explore and justify mathematical thinking.

Courses Offered

The mathematics program offers a range of courses, including:

• Core Math: a two-year course for students in grades 6 and 7, providing a bridge to Algebra
• Algebra: a foundations year 1 course, studying linear relationships as equations, tables, and graphs
• Geometry: a foundations year 2 course, studying figures, including classification and measurement of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional objects
• Algebra 2: a continuation of Algebra, extended to the language of functions
• Precalculus: a full-year functions theory course, adding logarithmic, polynomial, rational, and reciprocal trigonometric functions
• Calculus AP: a course for students in grade 12, with the expectation that students will sit for the AP exam in May
• Senior Intensive in Math: an independent study opportunity for seniors who have completed Precalculus

Co-Curricular Opportunities

The mathematics program offers several co-curricular opportunities, including:

• Math Teaching Assistant: well-qualified students can apply to be Math Teaching Assistants, helping teachers plan and teach classes for younger students
• Peer Tutoring Program: students can request to work with a trained Math Peer Tutor on homework help and study habits
• Math Cafe: a weekly elective staffed by a Math Teacher and trained Peer Tutor(s), providing homework help
• Math Focus/Flex Talks: faculty and alumni present interesting math problems or topics during twice-per-semester talks

Placement Process

The mathematics program engages in a thoughtful process of placement and course development, seeking to meet students where they are, while providing rigor and preparation for future work in quantitative disciplines.

Faculty

The mathematics program is led by Rebecca Reed, Math Department Chair, who has taught for over a decade in the areas of STEM, including math and physics, and has experience in the Biotech and Data Science Industry.
