Master's Program in Atmospheric Sciences, Oceanography and Climate Physics

The Master's Program in Atmospheric Sciences, Oceanography and Climate Physics is a comprehensive program that delves into the intricacies of the atmosphere and ocean using the laws of physics. Degree Project

The degree project comprises 30, 45, or 60 credits, depending on the student's background in Meteorology or Oceanography. For those without prior studies in these fields, the degree project is limited to 30 credits.


Elective Courses

Elective courses of up to 30 credits can be chosen, with the option to replace some of these credits with optional courses, especially for students new to Meteorology or Oceanography.


Complementary Courses

For students without a background in Meteorology or Oceanography, complementary courses are required in the first semester. These include:

  • Fundamental dynamics, MO4006, 15 credits

Program Structure

The program is structured over two years, with a combination of compulsory, prerequisite, and elective courses. The structure varies depending on whether the student has a prior background in Meteorology or Oceanography.


Year 1

  • Autumn Semester:
    • For students with a background in Meteorology or Oceanography, courses include Cloud micro- and macrophysics, Turbulent boundary layers, and Practical meteorology.
    • For students without this background, courses include Atmospheric structure and Fundamental dynamics.
  • Spring Semester:
    • For students with a background, elective courses are available.
    • For students without a background, courses include Waves and instabilities, Climate and the general circulation, and elective courses.

Year 2

  • Autumn Semester: Elective courses for all students, with Practical meteorology available for those who haven't taken it.
  • Spring Semester: The degree project is undertaken, with options for 30, 45, or 60 credits.

Independent Project

The Degree Project provides students with the experience of scientific work in meteorology, oceanography, or climate physics. Students are encouraged to propose their own projects or can be assigned one by the course administrator.
