Master's in Law

Overview

The Master's in Law at VU Amsterdam is designed to deepen legal knowledge while allowing for specialization. It provides a solid academic foundation that prepares students to approach complex legal issues with critical, analytical, and scientifically grounded perspectives. The program emphasizes the social relevance of law and aligns with the philosophy of law in action, facilitating the connection between theory and practice.


Students will study not only the law as it currently stands but also analyze the impacts of legal rules and institutions in national, European, and international contexts.


Specializations

Students have the opportunity to choose from ten specializations within the Master's in Law, each with the same admission requirements:


  • Labour Law (NL)
  • Construction Law (NL)
  • Conflict Resolution, Judiciary and Mediation (NL)
  • European and International Law (EN)
  • International Migration and Refugee Law (EN)
  • International Technology Law (EN)
  • Internet Law and Intellectual Property (NL)
  • Law and Government (NL)
  • Civil Law (NL)
  • Criminal Law (NL)

Civiel Effect

Holding a qualifying Bachelor's degree in Law grants access to the so-called toga professions in the judiciary or the legal profession for all specializations within the Master's in Law.


Programme Structure

The Master's programme has a uniform structure across all specializations:


  • Advanced Course: 12 EC
  • Internationalisation Course: 6 EC
  • Legal Methodology: 6 EC
  • Master's Thesis: 12 EC
  • Integration Course (or a choice from several integration courses): 6 EC
  • Restricted Elective from a list of specific electives: 6 EC
  • Electives: 12 EC (may include an internship of up to 6 EC)

Career Prospects

Graduates will be well-prepared for a variety of positions in the legal field, including roles in the judiciary, ministries, law firms, business, consultancy, and academia. Additionally, a Master's degree is a prerequisite for admission to training programs for judges, lawyers, and public prosecutors, making it a significant step towards a legal career.


Start Dates

The program commences on 1 September and 1 February each year.
