Farsi Beginners

Overview

The Farsi Beginners course is designed for individuals with little to no prior knowledge of the Farsi language. The course is divided into three parts, each building on the previous one, and covers various topics and grammar to help students communicate confidently in Farsi.

Who is this class for?

This course is suitable for absolute beginners who want to start learning Farsi. Students who have some prior knowledge of Farsi can join Part Two or Part Three directly, but it is recommended to contact the university to determine the appropriate level.

Course Structure

The course consists of three parts, each covering different topics and grammar.

Part One

• Topics:
  • Greeting and leave-taking
  • Introducing yourself
  • Enquiring about health
  • Personal identification: gender, nationality, marital status, place of birth, hobbies, occupation
  • Party game: Who am I?
  • Introducing B to C
  • Complimenting and responding to compliments
  • House and home
• Grammar:
  • Personal pronouns (how to say ‘I’, ‘you’, ’s/he’ ...)
  • Verb 'to be' in the present simple tense (how to say ‘I am’, ‘you are’, s/he is’ ...)
  • Questions (intonation, word order)
  • The magical functions of ezāfe (sound /e/ linking a noun to following information)
  • Expressing possession (how to say ‘my’, ‘mine’ ...)
  • Demonstratives (how to say ‘this/these’, ‘that/those’)
  • How to say 'so
    or am I', 'so
    or do I', 'so
    or have I' ...
  • Plural of nouns (how to say ‘book/books’)
  • Verb 'to have' (how to say ‘I have’, ‘you have’, ‘s/he has’ ...)

Part Two

• Grammar:
  • Introduction to Persian script
  • Past simple tense (how to say 'I went')
  • Compound verbs (how to say ‘to make a phone call’ ...)
  • Definite article for a direct object (rā) (how to say ‘I saw him’ ...)
  • Making longer sentences (how to say ‘I took Ahmad to London by taxi yesterday)

Part Three

• Topics:
  • Personal details
  • Family and relations
  • Availability of facilities
• Grammar:
  • Introduction to Persian script continued
  • Common prepositions and prepositional phrases (how to say ‘in’, ‘on’, ‘under’ ...)
  • Ordinal numbers (how to say ‘first’, ‘second’, ‘third’ ...)
  • Postal address format (address on an envelope)
  • Present simple tense (how to say ‘I go to a Farsi class once a week’)
  • Verb 'to come' (how to say ‘I come here every week’)
  • How to say 'every day', once a day', 'once every two days'
  • Comparative adjectives (how to say ‘big / bigger’, ‘beautiful / more beautiful’)

Teaching

The course follows a communicative approach to language teaching, focusing on the language needed to communicate in authentic situations with an emphasis on speaking and listening. The classes are taught by experienced language teachers who are native speakers of the language or equivalent.

Learning Resources

The course uses Colloquial Persian throughout. Students are advised to wait until the first session before buying the course book.

• Standard Fee per Part: £300 (online courses), £365 (on-campus courses)
• 10% discount for undergraduate and postgraduate students and alumni
• Booking deadline: 10 days prior to the start date of each Part
