B.S. in Criminal Justice

The Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice at St. Francis College in New York provides a solid foundation for students wishing to pursue careers in social services, such as law, social work, law enforcement, probation, and non-profit organizational service and management. Available on our New York City campus or online, the program explores a wide variety of criminal justice disciplines with the goal of preparing graduates to solve social problems.

Program Objectives

• Identify the function and interrelationships between the major components of the American criminal justice system
• Critically analyze key criminology theories
• Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between theory and criminal justice policy
• Explain the impact of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and class on criminal justice outcomes

Curriculum

The B.S. in Criminal Justice curriculum is centered around student success, with a focus on academic, internship, and career path options. The program includes:

• A robust General Education Program, which is the cornerstone of SFC and affirms its mission to graduate educated, well-rounded individuals who enter the workforce and work to change and culturally diversify the world
• Specialized centers that offer students the opportunity to hear lectures by experts in the fields of criminal justice and sociology
• Qualified bachelor of criminal justice degree students can participate in the St. Francis Honors Program, where students participate in a series of small, intensive seminars, trips, and other activities that lead towards a senior thesis

Internship Opportunities

Students are offered the opportunity to work as research assistants and gain valuable for-credit internships at various social service and criminal justice agencies.

Curriculum Requirements

• CRIMINAL JUSTICE B.S. | 123-129 CREDITS
• Those students who are declared criminal justice majors and who successfully complete a minimum of 40 hours with the New York Police Department Police Academy and a minimum of 135 contact hours while participating in the New York Police Department Police Cadet Program may enroll in CJ-4991 Internship in Criminal Justice for three additional credits and will be awarded three credits to satisfy the 12 elective credits requirements with approval from the Department Chairperson.
