The Master's in Inclusive Education focuses on the issues that concern the inclusion of learners. These include the philosophical, ethical, and legal aspects that can impact the provision of education in different settings.

The concept of inclusion is challenging and wide-ranging, and you'll be given the opportunity to engage critically with the policy and practice of inclusive education, as well as opportunities to develop your knowledge in specialist areas of SEN.

The MA is also ideal for SENCos who have completed the National Award for SENCo and wish to continue their studies. Accredited Prior Learning (APL) is available.

What you'll learn

• Through a combination of taught academic sessions at Master’s level, and self-directed study, you'll gain in-depth knowledge of this field, and how it influences the way students (children, young people, and adults) experience education in various national and international contexts.

Course structure

Our Master’s in Inclusive Education can be studied full-time or part-time. Full-time study runs over one academic year and is divided into three trimesters. Part-time students will take 180 credits completed over two academic years with one module in each trimester of your first year. Your final year comprises one module in trimester one and a double credit dissertation module in trimesters two and three.

Trimester one

• In your first trimester, you’ll undertake modules which will show how inclusion is exercised in education settings. You’ll develop a deeper understanding of the barriers to inclusion and examine the role of education in contemporary societies. You’ll also explore how educational reform is constructed and implemented to deliver social and economic change.

Trimester two

• In your second trimester, you’ll further explore a topic relating to inclusive education and develop the necessary research skills and understanding to be able to carry out professionally relevant research that underpins the final stage Master’s dissertation. You’ll be introduced to the principles and practices of social research, offering a solid foundation upon which to design, propose and implement a research project. You’ll learn a range of practical, qualitative and quantitative methodologies and methods from which you can select the most appropriate for your own needs in your dissertation or other research project.

The course will prepare you to be a researcher. This includes developing the ability to design a piece of research with appropriate methods and to write a research proposal in the form of an action plan.

Trimester three

• This module provides you with an opportunity to undertake a substantial piece of research on an aspect of inclusive education which you have identified as relevant to your context, and to report the research process and findings in a format appropriate to postgraduate level study.

Students are strongly advised to consult the Award Leader before making their final module selection.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment takes a range of formats, including a range of written assignments, for example, critical reviews of literature, reflective accounts, presentations, and reflective commentaries. You'll also complete a final Dissertation.

How will I be taught?

The degree is delivered through a variety of workshops, lectures, seminars and practical sessions. Some modules have both Saturday and twilight sessions.

The MA in Inclusive Education is designed for those who are working in education as teachers or programme leaders, as well as those who wish to learn more about this field and how it influences the way students (children, young people, and adults) experience education in various national and international contexts.

The MA is also ideal for SENCos who have completed the National Award for SENCo and wish to continue their studies.

Interested in applying?

What we look for in potential students

You'll have completed your undergraduate degree in an education related field, ideally with some links to inclusive education. You may be working in an educational setting, or you may be continuing with your studies having just completed your undergraduate degree. You should be interested in inclusion, particularly for learners with SEN, and you should be able to demonstrate a strong drive to improve outcomes for all learners.

Students who have completed the National Award for SENCo or the Postgraduate Certificate in Specific Learning Difficulties / Dyslexia are able to accredit their prior learning (APL) towards the MA Inclusive Education. See our Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) web page to learn more.

If English is not your first language, you'll need to provide evidence of proficiency in the English language. The Admissions team assesses applications individually, but for postgraduate courses we're looking for an IELTS score of 6.5 overall.

When to apply

Many of our postgraduate courses have a limited number of student spaces. To avoid the disappointment of the course being full, we recommend that you apply now.

Late applications (generally those made after 31 July) will only be considered if places remain on the course.
