Online Pre-sessional English

Improve your English language skills to the level required by your University of Exeter degree, from anywhere in the world. This intensive programme offers progress of 0.5–1.0 IELTS points per term (depending on course length).

You’ll increase your confidence in English reading, writing, listening and speaking – both in social and academic settings – with a focus on subject-specific vocabulary and study skills.

Our online course is highly interactive, offering the same expert teaching and high standards as our in-person classes. If you prefer to learn face-to-face, we also offer an on-campus Pre-sessional English course.

• 98% of Online Pre-sessional English students progress to a UK university (based on students who completed the programme in 2024).
• Suitable for students with an offer to start a degree at the University of Exeter in September 2025.
• Develop essential study skills in academic writing, reading, listening and speaking – from anywhere in the world.
• Assessments include writing/reading/listening tests, a research essay and an academic presentation.
• Students who successfully complete all parts of the course are guaranteed a place at the University of Exeter (assuming that all other conditions outlined in their university offer letter have been met).

• All Non-SELT can only be accepted for Online PSE or On campus PSE if students are eligible for the combined CAS.
• Degrees requiring IELTS 6.0 or 6.5 overall
  • IELTS 6.0 and nothing less than 5.5
  • PTE 64 and nothing less than 59
  • TOEFL IBT 87 overall, 17 in Writing, 17 in Listening, 18 in Reading, 20 in Speaking
  • Duolingo 110 overall and no less than 95 in any sub-scores.
• Degrees requiring IELTS 6.5 and nothing less than 6.5
  • IELTS 6.0 and nothing less than 6.0
  • PTE 64 and nothing less than 64
  • TOEFL IBT 87 overall 21 in Writing, 21 in Listening, 21 in Reading, 21 in Speaking
  • Duolingo 110 overall and no less than 110 in any sub-scores.
• Degrees requiring IELTS 7.0 nothing less than 6.0
  • IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in Reading, 6.0 in another subskill and nothing less than 5.5
  • PTE 67 with 64 in Reading and another subskill and nothing less 59
  • TOEFL IBT 90 overall with 21 in Reading and Speaking, 17 in Listening and Writing
  • Duolingo 120 overall and no less than 110 in Literacy and Comprehension and no subscore less than 95.
• Degrees requiring IELTS 7.0 with 6.5 in writing and nothing less than 6.0
  • IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in Reading and Writing and nothing less than 5.5
  • PTE 67 overall, with 64 in Reading and Writing and nothing less than 59
  • TOEFL IBT 90 overall with 21 in Reading, 21 in Writing, 17 Listening, 20 in Speaking
  • Duolingo 120 overall and no less than 110 in Literacy and nothing less than 95.

All students who confirm their offer on or before 31 January 2026 will pay the 2025/2026 price as per their existing offer letter. After 31 January 2026, where tuition fees have increased, all current offers will be reissued and students will receive a new offer with the new 2026/2027 pricing.
