Filmmaking MA/MFA

Overview

Our innovative course will equip you to integrate the theory and practice of film, video and new screen media at an advanced level.

Course Options

• MA (Master of Arts): Our students traditionally produce outstanding films on a course that has proved ideal for graduates of film studies, cultural and media studies, humanities and social sciences, as well as art and design.
• MFA (Master of Fine Arts): The MFA level can be completed as a direct follow-on from the MA Filmmaking course at UEL or as a 'top-up' degree if you already have an MA in Film or a related area of moving image practice.

Entry Requirements

Academic Requirements

• Bachelor's degree with minimum Second Class (2:2) or equivalent in Humanities, Social Science or Art/Design related subject, with preference to Film, Media and Arts.
• International Qualifications: We accept a wide range of European and international qualifications in addition to A-levels, the International Baccalaureate and BTEC qualifications.

English Language Requirements

• Overall IELTS 6.0 with minimum 6.0 in writing and speaking, and 5.5 in listening and reading (or recognised equivalent)

Mature Applicants and Those Without Formal Qualifications

• As an inclusive university, we recognise those who have been out of education for some time may not have the formal qualifications usually required.
• We welcome applications from those who can demonstrate their enthusiasm and commitment to study and have the relevant life/work experience that equips them to succeed on the course.

Portfolio

• A portfolio is required and should be relevant to this course.
• It should include a wide range of work that shows your creativity, technical competence and understanding of the subject area.

Fees

• Home Applicant, Full-time: £10,680 per year
• Home Applicant, Part-time: £1,780 per 30 credit module
• International Applicant, Full-time: £16,140 per year

• Postgraduate Loans Scheme: £10,280 to fund your Masters Programme under the Postgraduate Loans (PGL) scheme
• Postgraduate Scholarship: Apply for a 50 per cent discount on your tuition fees

How You'll Learn

• You'll be taught by a range of staff, all of whom are practitioners in the area they teach.
• The assessments are based on practice-led teaching relevant to various aspects of the film industry.

• Each module is designed with both a practical component and a written reflective component, with the intention that students develop an ability to comment on and justify their creative process.

How You'll Be Assessed

• Coursework will include individual or group-based films (75%), and individual written assignment (25%).
• You'll receive written feedback, outlining your strengths and how you can improve.
• We aim to provide feedback on assessments within 15 working days.

• Our waterfront campus in the historic Royal Docks provides a modern, well-equipped learning environment.
• Join us and you'll be able to make the most of our facilities including contemporary lecture theatres and seminar rooms, art studios and exhibition spaces, audio and visual labs and a multimedia production centre.
