Master of National Security Policy Program

The Master of National Security Policy (MNSP) program is an executive, hybrid program designed to address traditional, unconventional, and emerging challenges in national security. This flexible program is specifically created for mid-career professionals who want to grow professionally while continuing to work in the field.

Program Details

• Program Length: One year, or up to 20 months

Curriculum

The curriculum is divided into three sections:

1. Content: - Methods of Policy Analysis - Leadership in the National Security Policy Environment - National Security Ethics
2. Process: - National Security Budgeting - National Security Strategy - Institutions of National Security - Team-Based Learning for National Security Professionals
3. Outcomes: - Threats and Opportunities - Elective - Professional Practice in National Security - Students explore common barriers in national security work and work one-on-one with faculty members to solve a professional practice issue either through research or a large-scale project.

Degree Requirements

The MNSP is a rigorous 30-credit program that includes a capstone course, "Professional Practice in National Security," where students work one-on-one with a faculty member to solve a professional practice issue.

Faculty

About the Cohort

Each MNSP cohort is limited to 25 students to support strong cohort connections, create an engaging online learning environment, and ensure personalized instruction.

Student Profile

The program is designed for those currently working in national security with at least 7 years of experience, including military servicemembers, civil servants, contractors, and consultants.

In-Person and Online Learning

Students spend 2 weeks on Duke University's campus the first summer of enrollment and 2 long weekends per term until degree completion. The program includes online learning, interaction with faculty, and projects directly related to work in national security.
