Introduction to the Internal Medicine Residency Program

The Internal Medicine Residency program at NYU Langone Health is guided by the institution's trifold mission to care, teach, and discover. This mission inspires both residents and faculty throughout the integrated academic medical center. Clinical training is based on serving the unique and varied patient populations of New York City across a variety of clinical settings.

Mission Statement

NYU Langone's mission to care, teach, and discover inspires our internal medicine residents and faculty. Our clinical training serves the unique patient populations of New York City. We offer several tracks to personalize training according to residents' interests. We are dedicated to developing physicians and physician-scientists who will be leaders in health systems, transforming healthcare by providing compassionate, evidence-based care.

Welcome from the Program Director

Margaret R. Horlick, MD, welcomes prospective residents to the NYU Internal Medicine Residency program. She highlights the program's ethos, camaraderie, and shared thrill of scientific and humanistic work. The variety of patients and service models across training sites allows residents to experience the breadth and depth of Internal Medicine, fostering deep learning and adaptive expertise.

Program Overview

The program offers unique training experiences at three types of hospital systems in New York City: private, municipal, and federal. Residents encounter a broad range of patients and diseases, preparing them for a rewarding career in clinical and academic medicine. The Department of Medicine has over 1,200 faculty affiliated with subspecialty divisions and is currently training more than 223 internal medicine residents, with a diverse research portfolio supported by $75 million in annual funding.

Residency Tracks and Programs

The program offers several tracks to cater to different interests and career goals:

  • Categorical Medicine Tracks: Full residency training for board certification.
  • Primary Care Track: Specializing in holistic primary care.
  • Community Health Track: Competence in serving the Brooklyn community.
  • Family Health Centers Program: Proficiency in caring for diverse patient populations.
  • Clinical Investigator Track: Preparation for a career in translational, clinical, and population-based research.
  • Preliminary Medicine Track: Foundation for internal medicine or other specialty medicine residencies.

Outcomes and Career Paths

Graduates of the Internal Medicine Residency program have their choice of the most sought-after fellowships and internal medicine jobs. Approximately 70 percent of graduates participate in a fellowship program with a match rate greater than 98 percent. The other 30 percent become general internists, both as hospitalists and in ambulatory practice in academic and community medical settings. Many graduates go on to become academic faculty, department chairs, and clinical leaders in hospitals throughout the United States.

Research Opportunities

Residents take advantage of vibrant research opportunities and develop into prolific clinician scientists, producing significant scholarship. The program's dedication to excellence in teaching, patient care, research, and residency programs prepares residents for any field they choose.

Conclusion

The NYU Internal Medicine Residency program is committed to developing well-rounded physicians and physician-scientists. With its diverse training settings, personalized tracks, and strong research focus, the program equips residents with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in their careers and make meaningful contributions to the field of internal medicine.
