Program Overview

The Master of Education in Social Studies Education is a part-time, online program offered by the Department of Curriculum & Pedagogy at the University of British Columbia. The program is designed for educators who want to enhance their teaching practice and explore the latest research and pedagogies in social studies education.


Curriculum, Historical Inquiry, and Pedagogy (CHiP)

The CHiP program delves into key aspects of social studies curricula, including connections to historical thinking, historical consciousness, visual culture, anti-oppressive and anti-racism education, gender studies, moral education, and the history and politics of curriculum. The program is cohort-based, inviting students to work through the program in a collaborative community of practice.

Program Structure

The program consists of a series of courses, including:


  • Master’s Seminar (2-week intensive)
  • Review of Research in Curriculum & Pedagogy
  • Curriculum Issues & Theories
  • Research Methods in Education
  • Theorizing Pedagogy (3-week intensive)
  • Electives (recommended)
  • Graduating Paper or approved elective

Application Requirements

  • A four-year Bachelor’s degree in Education with at least a 76% average on senior-level credits
  • Normally 18 credits of senior course work or a professional concentration in Social Studies
  • Normally two years’ teaching experience or other relevant professional experience
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Resume/CV
  • A 600-word statement of intent

Fees

  • Tuition Fees:
    • Domestic: $2,435.86 per installment (total: $17,051.02)
    • International: $2,871.79 per installment (total: $20,102.53)
  • Student Fees: Additional fees established and authorized by the UBC Board of Governors and student societies

Application Process

  • Submit an online application
  • Upload supporting documents (transcripts, degree certificates, English language assessment report, statement of intent, and resume)
  • Provide references (three letters of recommendation)
