Program Overview

The Elementary Mathematics Specialist (EMS) Program at the University of Chicago is a comprehensive program designed for educators. A new cohort begins in September 2025, and cohort members will take six courses from September 2025 to June 2027. All courses will be held virtually on Zoom, with exact dates to be determined.


Program Structure

The program consists of the following courses:


  • Fall 2025: Number and Operations I
  • Winter 2026: Number and Operations II
  • Spring 2026: Algebraic and Proportional Reasoning
  • Fall 2026: Leadership in Mathematics Education (practicum project spans the school year)
  • Winter 2027: Geometry and Measurement I
  • Spring 2027: Geometry and Measurement II

Program Costs

The cost per course is $1000, which is equivalent to $300 per credit hour. Financial aid for these courses is not available from the University of Chicago. However, some schools or districts may be able to support part or all of the cost of coursework.


Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the program, applicants must meet the following requirements:


  • Professional Educator License in Illinois (or out-of-state educator license)
  • At least 2 years of teaching experience
  • Master’s degree
