Program Overview

The Wilderness Medicine Rotation is a comprehensive program that introduces students to the principles and practices of wilderness medicine. The course is designed to provide a thorough understanding of the major topics in wilderness medicine, including high altitude illness, heat and cold illness, burns, wildland fires, allergies and anaphylaxis, wilderness trauma, wilderness preparedness, search and rescue, bites and stings, and wilderness improvisation.


Course Details

  • The course is offered in a didactic setting for the first week, covering the major topics in wilderness medicine.
  • The second week is spent in the wilderness of the Sierra Nevadas, where students implement the knowledge they have gained in practical scenarios.
  • The course includes topics such as rock climbing and water safety.
  • The program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of wilderness medicine and its application in real-world scenarios.

Application Process

  • Applications are accepted annually between January 1 and March 1.
  • The application fee is $150 per non-UCSF student.
  • To apply, students must complete the online application process, which includes submitting a one-page essay that discusses their interest in wilderness medicine and how it is an integral part of their future in medicine.
  • Selected applicants will be notified approximately two weeks after the deadline.

Program Requirements

  • Students must be prepared to cover some expenses related to backcountry activities, including their camping equipment.
  • The elective is not part of the UCSF lottery.

Program Schedule

  • The course is offered from September 15 to September 26, 2025.
  • The class is planned as in-person, but students will be notified of any changes.

Program Costs

  • The application fee is $150 per non-UCSF student.
  • The cost for housing is $112.50 for one week and $225.00 for two weeks.
  • Student housing for UCSF students is free.

Program Location

  • The program is located in Fresno/Yosemite.

Maximum Students

  • The summer course has a maximum of 14 students.
