Prospectus for 2026

This special program offers non-Japanese students an opportunity to work toward Doctor of Engineering (3 years) or Master of Engineering (2 years) degrees. Top qualified students who passed the September Application will be awarded scholarships including the Japanese Government's Scholarship (MEXT: The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) and other equivalent scholarships provided by IME Graduate Program. We also seek highly qualified students to enroll as self-supporting students. All of the students will be enrolled in one of the departments below.

Tuition and Fees

Entrance Fee

282,000 yen (as of 2025)


Annual Tuition Fee

  • 535,800 yen (Master) (as of 2025)
  • 520,800 yen (Doctor) (as of 2025)

Examination Fee (at the time of online application)

10,000 yen


Students awarded the MEXT scholarships are exempt from the above fees, therefore, the examination fee will be refunded upon enrollment.


Scholarship

Top qualified September Applicants who have exceptional academic records will be awarded the Japanese Government's MEXT scholarship by recommendation of the University of Tokyo or scholarships provided by IME Graduate Program for the period of either the Doctoral program or the Masters program. The MEXT Scholarship grantees are exempt from Entrance Fee and Annual Tuition Fees throughout their entire term of study.


MEXT Scholarship Amount (Basic Monthly Stipend + Additional Stipend) (as of 2025)

  • Master's student: 144,000 yen
  • Doctoral student: 145,000 yen

The additional stipend varies according to the student's "principal place of research," regardless of place of residence.


Financial Supports for Self-Supporting Students

  • IME Students who are not awarded any scholarship, including the scholarships other than the ones offered by IME Graduate program, are called self-supporting students: they are responsible for their own fees and living expenses.
  • After entering The University of Tokyo, self-supporting students have chances to apply for several kinds of private scholarships. However, please note that many well-qualified students compete for these scholarships and that the scholarship amounts are often lower than the MEXT Scholarship. Basically, there are almost no scholarships available before your enrollment.
  • Self-supporting students can apply for the exemption of Entrance Fee and Annual Tuition, Entrance Fee could be exempted up to a half of the full amount. Annual Tuition could be exempted a half or the whole of the total amount.

Admission

The Graduate Council of the University of Tokyo grants admission to this program based upon the recommendation of the Graduate School of Engineering. Screening for admission is based both on the evaluation of documents submitted by the international students and, if necessary, on the internet interviews and examinations conducted by the faculty. There are three application periods (July application for April Enrollment, September application, and January application for October Enrollment). When the evaluation process is complete, applicants who are evaluated as qualified and meet the IME criteria will be granted admission to this program. At September Application, top qualified applicants among them will be nominated as candidates for scholarships provided by IME Graduate Program.


I. July Application (for the applicants who enroll in April 2026)

  • This application period is only for the applicants of Department of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Information Systems, and Precision Engineering. Scholarship by IME Graduate Program will not be provided in July Application.
  • Time and Date are based on Japan Standard Time
    1. July 1st, 2025 (from 15:00 JST): Start of On-line Registration/ On-line Application
    2. July 11th, 2025: Deadline for individual screening
    3. August 13th, 2025 (15:00 JST): Deadline of Registration
    4. August 20th, 2025 (15:00 JST): Deadline of On-line Application, including Recommendation letters and payment of examination fee
    5. September 3rd, 2025: Deadline of receiving the acceptance letter from your prospective supervisor
    6. September 10th, 2025: Deadline for submitting paper-based application documents
    7. The end of November 2025: Announcement of the selection result
    8. During December 2025: On-line application for The UT lodges, Application for Certificate of Eligibility required to apply for Student Visa
    9. April 1st, 2026: Matriculation at the University of Tokyo

II. September Application (for the applicants who enroll in October 2026)

  • When you apply during this application period, you will automatically be included in the selection for the 3 types of scholarship offered by the IME Graduate Program: MEXT scholarship, Scholarship sponsored by the University of Tokyo, and Scholarship sponsored by Graduate School of Engineering.
  • Time and Date are based on Japan Standard Time
    1. September 1st, 2025 (from 15:00 JST): Start of On-line Registration/ On-line Application
    2. September 12th, 2025: Deadline for individual screening
    3. October 8th, 2025 (15:00 JST): Deadline of Registration
    4. October 15th, 2025 (15:00 JST): Deadline of On-line Application, including Recommendation letters and payment of examination fee
    5. October 29th, 2025: Deadline of receiving the acceptance letter from your prospective supervisor
    6. November 5th, 2025: Deadline for submitting paper-based application documents
    7. The end of January 2026: Announcement of the selection result, The nominees of the scholarships from (1) to (4) are informed of their nomination.
    8. The beginning of June 2026: On-line application for The UT lodges, Application for Certificate of Eligibility required to apply for Student Visa
    9. October 1st, 2026: Matriculation at the University of Tokyo

III. January Application (for the applicants who enroll in October 2026)

  • Scholarship by IME Graduate Program will not be provided in January Application.
  • Time and Date are based on Japan Standard Time
    1. January 5th, 2026 (from 15:00 JST): Start of On-line Registration/ On-line Application
    2. January 16th, 2026: Deadline for individual screening
    3. February 10th, 2026 (15:00 JST): Deadline of Registration
    4. February 17th, 2026 (15:00 JST): Deadline of On-line Application, including Recommendation letters and payment of examination fee
    5. March 4th, 2026: Deadline of receiving the acceptance letter from your prospective supervisor
    6. March 11th, 2026: Deadline for submitting paper-based application documents
    7. The end of May 2026: Announcement of the selection result.
    8. The beginning of June 2026: On-line application for The UT lodges, Application for Certificate of Eligibility required to apply for Student Visa
    9. October 1st, 2026: Matriculation at the University of Tokyo

  • [Form 2]: Please provide your academic grades (1-6) as stated officially in your transcript.
  • [Form 3]: TOEFL is preferable. If you already have IELTS score or if it is difficult for you to take TOEFL test, we will accept IELTS score. GRE is required by IME Graduate Program. GMAT is not acceptable.
  • [Form 5]: It is essential to find and write one or two prospective supervisor(s) whose research field matches yours.
  • [Form Recommend]: IME Graduate Program requires two recommendation letters from the faculty members of the university you belong to or graduated from.

  • Both must be the faculty member of the university and one of them must be your direct academic supervisor. 10,11. Full Academic Transcript (Bachelor's & Master's)
  • If you haven't completed your course yet, you are requested to submit all the academic transcript you have received by the time of application. 12,13,14. Certificate of Graduation / Diploma, Certificate of Degree, or Certificate of Expected Graduation
  • One certified copy (with certified seal/stamp of the university you belong to or graduated from) is required.
  1. Personal Identification/Passport
  • A photocopy of your valid passport (the most preferable), census register, or other proof of citizenship.
  1. Letter of Declaration
  2. English Language Proficiency
  • Please submit (A), (B), or (C).
    1. TOEFL (or IELTS): One copy of your TOEFL score is required.
    2. The Certificate of English as the Medium of Instruction from your university.
    3. If English is your native language, you do not have to submit any of the above document. Instead, please submit proof of citizenship, such as a copy of your valid passport.
  1. GRE Score (GRE General test)
  • Please arrange so that ETS Center can directly send it to the University of Tokyo.
  • DI (Designated Institution) code of the University of Tokyo Engineering: 8596
  1. A copy of Examination Fee payment receipt
  • 10,000 Japanese Yen is required for the examination fee.
  1. Acceptance Letter from your prospective supervisor.
  2. Master Thesis (Only for doctoral degree course applicants, if applicable)
  3. Enclose this Submission Checklist whenever you send materials to the ICT Admissions Desk via post.

Application Procedures

IME Graduate Program applicants must apply through the T-cens, an online application system for the Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo.


  1. Find your prospective supervisor at the University of Tokyo.
  • You must find your prospective supervisor whose research field matches yours from the academic staff involved in IME Graduate Program.
  1. Create your T-cens account.
  • You can create your T-cens account by clicking the blue T-cens icon.
  1. Visit your account page
  • After creating your T-cens account, you will soon receive the e-mail at your registered e-mail address with the URL of Login page as well as Login ID and Password.
  1. Fill in the Application Forms in T-cens.
  • Click "Apply" icon on your account page, and fill in Online Application Forms from Form 1 to Form 7.
  1. Upload files.
  • Upload your photo.
  • Download and fill in AF0, and AF2 - AF6, and upload them.
  • Upload all the other required files on the list.
  1. Complete Recommendation Documents.
  • Please fill in the required information of your referees.
  1. Pay Examination Fee by Credit Card.
  • You must make payment of 10,000 yen by credit card by the IME Online Application Deadline.
  1. Press "Submit" tab and "Submit" button.
  • Click "Submit" tab at the top, and review all the contents of your online application documents as well as the status of the recommendation letters.
  1. Contact IME Graduate Program Office.
  • Please inform IME Graduate Program Office of your T-cens Applicant ID Number and the completion of IME Application Procedure 1-8.
  1. Contact the prospective supervising professor.
  • After you receive a reply from IME Graduate Program Office, you can proceed to contact your prospective supervisor and ask whether he/she could accept you in his/her laboratory.
  1. Receive an acceptance letter.
  • When your prospective supervisor agrees to accept you or when you receive the electronic version of the acceptance letter, please forward it to IME Graduate Program Office immediately.
  1. Submit paper-based application documents.
  • Please send all the required documents to IME Graduate Program Office by EMS or another international delivery service so that they can arrive at the Office on time.
  1. Go to "Post" tab and press "Finish" button.
  • After you ship out the paper-based documents by post, please go to "Post" tab and press "Finish" button by the deadline date.
