Program Details
The University of Copenhagen offers a course titled "Analytical Seminar" (HLVK03851U) as part of its Literature Studies program.
Course Description
The course trains students in theoretically informed analysis of literary texts, focusing on identifying questions raised by a given text through its unique literary devices and selecting theoretical texts to help answer or explore these questions. The course is divided into three thematic blocks: style, narratology, and topos.
- The style block focuses on the literary text's stylistic features, covering topics such as tropes and figures, syntax, vocabulary, and rhythm.
- The narratology block deals with the text's narrative conditions and dramaturgy, touching on subjects like voice, focalization, unnatural narrators, and plot.
- The topos block concentrates on topology, intertextuality, motif history, and analysis.
Teaching Methods
The teaching consists of lectures providing an overview of selected methodological and theoretical questions within each thematic block, and workshops where the focus is on the students' active analytical work with literary texts. Fixed working forms in the seminars include collective close reading and discussion of mini-writing exercises.
