Overview of the Engineering Education PhD Program
The Engineering Education PhD program at Virginia Tech is an interdisciplinary research field that combines social science and engineering methods to understand and improve all aspects of the engineering education ecosystem. The program's research areas are organized into four overarching categories: teaching and learning, organization and systems, ethics and social responsibility, and inclusive excellence.
Admission Requirements
To be considered for admission to the Engineering Education PhD program, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Minimum GPA: 3.0
- TOEFL IBT: 90, with minimum sub-scores of 20 in reading, listening, speaking, and writing
- IELTS (TOEFL alternative): 6.5
- GRE: optional
- Letter(s) of recommendation: 3 required
- Required supplemental materials:
- A statement of purpose and research interests that articulates and demonstrates the applicant’s specific qualifications for graduate study and end goal once their work is completed (~1000-word limit; 2-pages, single-spaced)

Degree Requirements
The Engineering Education PhD program requires a minimum of 90 total credit hours, including:
- Total minimum credit hour requirement of graded graduate-level courses: 52
- Total minimum credit hour requirement of Research: 30

- ENGE 5214: Issues in Engineering Education (2 credits)
- ENGE 5224: Disciplinary Literacy: Theorizing and Writing in Engineering Education (3 credits)
- ENGE 5604: Engineering Education Research Methods (3 credits)
- ENGE 5514: Applied Design and Assessment of Engineering Educations Experiences (3 credits)
- ENGE 5304: Graduate Student Success in Multicultural Environments (1 credit)
- ENGE 5704: Engineering Education Graduate Seminar (1 credit X 4 semesters)
- ENGE 6614: Quantitative Data Analysis for Research in Engineering Education (3 credits) or ENGE 6624: Qualitative Data Analysis for Research in Engineering Education (3 credits)
Elective Courses
The program requires the following elective courses:
- Engineering cognate (engineering): 12 credits
- Social science cognate (education or other social science): 12 credits
- Electives (engineering or education theory or methods): 9 credits
Other Requirements
- At least one (3 credit) quantitative and one (3 credit) qualitative social science methods course must be taken across all Plan of Study courses.
- At least nine (9) credits must be at the 6000 level, relevant to the student's research (do not have to be ENGE courses)
