Bachelor of Arts in European Studies

The Bachelor of Arts in European Studies is a joint program that allows students to study across up to three leading European universities. This program combines politics, law, history, economics, and culture, offering unique perspectives on Europe and the world.

About the Programme

The Bachelor of Arts in European Studies is an Una Europa program, which is a pioneering alliance of 11 leading research universities from across Europe. The program is designed to provide students with a deep understanding of Europe's institutions, cultures, and global role.

• The program is a joint effort between four start universities:

  • Alma Mater Studiorum Università di Bologna (Italy)
  • Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain)
  • Uniwersytet Jagiellonski w Krakowie (Poland)
• Mobility universities include:

Bachelor of European Studies Programme Structure

A Multidisciplinary Truncus Communis

The program starts with a common curriculum (Truncus Communis) at one of the four degree-awarding universities. This core includes courses on the European Union, European history and culture, and introductions to five key disciplines: Politics, Law, Economics, History, and Philosophy.

• Students develop essential academic and research skills.
• The structure is flexible, but the experience is transformative.

Choose a Specialisation

After completing the first two semesters of the Truncus Communis, students move to a different university for a year to pursue a disciplinary or multidisciplinary major specialisation (60 ECTS):

3. Sociology, Communication and Education
4. Business and Economics
5. Philosophy
6. History
7. Languages and Culture
8. Multidisciplinary specializations (e.g., combination of Politics and Law)

Admission and Application

The BAES programme is a selective degree, and all candidates need to go through the application process. Only those applications that meet the minimum eligibility criteria and adhere to the specified deadline are taken into consideration for the admissions selection process.

Tuition Fees, Study Costs, and Scholarships

Tuition Fees

The fees for any individual student are contingent upon their academic programme and the nationality of the student. Since BAES is a joint programme, the tuition fees for this programme are jointly determined by all participating universities, but are paid centrally via KU Leuven as the coordinating university.

• The tuition fees are fixed for the duration of the programme and do not depend on the start university or mobility trajectory.

Study Costs

The study costs consist of the yearly tuition fee and degree-specific costs. Besides study costs, students also need to take living and transportation expenses into account.

Further Study Options
