BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Management (with a year in industry)

The BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Management (with a year in industry) program at the University of York is designed to equip students with the mathematical and statistical skills necessary to analyze financial risk and operational strategy for different businesses. This four-year full-time program combines the study of mathematics and management, providing students with a strong foundation in both disciplines.

• Mathematics: calculus, linear algebra, probability, and statistics
• Management: economics, finance, accounting, and operations management
• Year in industry: students will work on real-life cases and learn about the context in which business analysts and operations managers work

Year 1

• Core modules:
  • Foundations and Calculus
  • Introduction to Probability and Statistics

  • Multivariable Calculus and Matrices
  • Business Economics
  • Finance Fundamentals
• Academic integrity module: this module covers essential skills and knowledge to help students study independently and produce work of a high academic standard

Year 2

• Core modules:
  • Probability and Markov Chains
  • Strategic Management
  • People, Management and Professional Development
  • Statistical Inference and Linear Models
  • Linear Algebra
  • Financial Modelling with R

Year 3 (in industry)

• Students will work on real-life cases and learn about the context in which business analysts and operations managers work
• The dedicated Placements Office will advertise hundreds of vacancies each year, and students can find placements in all sorts of industries, all over the world

Year 4

• Core modules:
  • Mathematical Finance in Discrete Time
  • Decision Theory and Bayesian Statistics
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Operations Research
• Option modules: students will study two option modules, which may include:
  • Company Law
  • Cyber Security for Managers
  • Sustainability and Business
  • Managing Diversity
  • Real Options Valuation

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:

• Formulate mathematical models to describe operational and financial risks
• Deploy the methods of logical reasoning and the techniques of mathematical problem-solving to analyze the properties and consequences of financial and operational models
• Apply economic, financial, and accounting knowledge in an operational context
• Use the techniques of mathematical statistics to draw inferences from the application of operational and financial models to data
• Communicate the results and insights of operational and financial analyses to stakeholders

Fees and Funding

• Annual tuition fees:
  • UK (home): £9,535
  • International and EU: £27,500
• Fees for subsequent years: UK (home) fees may increase within the government fee cap, while international fees are subject to increase in line with the prevailing Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate
• Additional costs: students may need to buy textbooks, which can cost around £30-£60 each

Entry Requirements

• Qualification: A levels, BTEC National Extended Diploma, European Baccalaureate, International Baccalaureate, T levels, Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers, other international qualifications
• Typical offer:
  • A levels: AAB including A in Mathematics
  • BTEC National Extended Diploma: DDD plus A in A Level Mathematics
  • European Baccalaureate: 80% overall, including 85% in Mathematics
  • International Baccalaureate: 35 points including Higher Level 6 in Mathematics
• Alternative offers: meeting certain criteria may qualify students for an alternative offer
• English language requirements: students may need to provide evidence of their English language ability, with minimum requirements for IELTS, IB English, Cambridge CEFR, and other qualifications
