Program Overview

The PhD in Tourism, Heritage, and Territory is a 3rd cycle study program offered by the University of Coimbra. The program aims to couple the knowledge of territory and its underlying heritage with tourist activities, viewed in the light of the best practices of territorial and sectoral management.


General Objectives of the Course

  • To encourage direct interaction with stakeholders and decision-makers regarding the provision of tourist services, as well as with people responsible for the policies of relevant related fields.
  • To take advantage of the asset of territory by applying methodologies and practices to develop skills for creating and innovating tourist and heritage activities.
  • To train staff members and researchers to act as agents capable of transposing into the professional practices the knowledge that supports the planning, design, development, and evaluation of projects at different scales, dimensions, and institutional levels.

Admission Requirements

Eligible candidates to this cycle of studies include:


  • Holders of an MA or a legally equivalent degree in Tourism and Leisure, Geography, Management, Cultural Studies, Humanities, Other Social Sciences, Other Business Sciences, Architecture and Engineering, and related techniques.
  • Holders of a BA or of especially relevant academic or scientific qualifications recognised by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities as attesting the ability to attend this cycle of studies.
  • Holders of academic, scientific or professional qualifications recognised by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities as attesting the ability to attend this cycle of studies.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Evaluation is a key educational activity in the teaching process and is meant to assess the skills and knowledge acquired by students, their critical thinking and ability to outline and solve problems, as well as their mastery of written and oral expression. Eligible candidates to the exams must be enrolled in the corresponding course units in the academic year of such exams. The following are examples of evaluation instruments: Written or oral exam, tests, and written or practical assignments, as well as individual or group projects possibly followed by an oral defence and participation in the seminar sessions.


Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

  • To develop argumentative skills and an original, autonomous, and critical thinking that contributes to the development of theoretical knowledge and tourism activity in its articulation with territory and heritage, and with land-use planning and heritage management.
  • To rule research by accuracy, ethical and quality standards, showing self-criticism skills and the ability to criticise others.
  • To demonstrate skills in the development of research methodologies that can be applied to the fields of tourism, territory, and heritage in a strategic manner and with a relevant socioeconomic impact.
  • To favour innovative subjects and approaches in the conducted studies, highlighting, if possible, comparative critical reflections.
  • To demonstrate the ability to share and disseminate the knowledge resulting from the research work within civil society and at national and international levels, attempting to join networks of fundamental and applied research through the subjects of their research.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.


Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The legal framework for the qualification is established by the following decrees: Decree-Law no. 74/2006 of March 24, in its current wording.


Graduation Requirements

Completion of a number of course units (study plan) totalling 240 ECTS, and including the public defence of an original thesis.


Access to Further Studies

Post-doctorate.
