Health Economic Evaluation Methods

The Health Economic Evaluation Methods course is a 5-credit course that focuses on the principles of economics concerning the prioritization of resources to health. The course discusses issues in moral philosophy in relation to health economics and analyzes the four most common health economic evaluation methods: cost analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis, cost-utility analysis, and cost-benefit analysis.

It then delves into the analysis of the four most common health economic evaluation methods, which are used to answer questions such as whether a new drug should replace an old one, whether a prevention program for a certain disease is cost-effective, and how priorities are made in healthcare. The course also covers methods used to critically analyze articles and reports about health economic evaluations and how to present such studies. Additionally, the course examines measures of disease burden in different societies in relation to measures of health-related quality of life, with special attention given to equity considerations and the theoretical background of health economic evaluation in terms of welfarism and extra-welfarism.

Eligibility

For non-programme students applying as single-course students, the requirements are:

• 120 ECTS, of which a minimum of 30 ECTS are within one of the following: health sciences, environmental health, or social sciences.
• English proficiency equivalent to English 6/level 2 from Swedish Upper secondary education.
