Introduction to Sport, Exercise and Nutrition (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons)

The Sport, Exercise and Nutrition BSc (Hons) course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between psychology, physiology, and nutrition in sport and exercise settings. This course is ideal for those who aspire to help individuals optimize their performance, whether in recreational or competitive sports, and tackle health challenges such as obesity and heart disease through optimal dietary habits.


Course Overview

The course shares common modules developed across the Department of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation to encourage multidisciplinary collaboration between students in sports science, sport and exercise nutrition, sports coaching, sports management, and physiotherapy. Students will learn through various methods, including lectures, presentations by visiting professionals, seminars, laboratory sessions, and workshops.

Extended Degree

The extended degree provides an alternative route to higher education and supports those who don’t meet the standard entry requirements for an undergraduate degree. What Will I Learn in My Foundation Year?

The foundation year allows students to gain knowledge and competence in key themes within sport. Students will learn about the different facets of sport and foster a basic understanding and knowledge of key principles and professions within sports disciplines. They will have the opportunity to work on real-world examples to examine existing sport-related projects and case studies, as well as the opportunity to undertake volunteering and experience a range of practical sports.

Entry Requirements

  • Standard Entry: We receive a high number of applications with qualifications from the United States. These applicants require a High School Graduation Diploma with a minimum GPA of 2.6.
  • 64-80 UCAS Tariff points: From a combination of acceptable Level 3 qualifications which may include: A-level, BTEC Diplomas/Extended Diplomas, Scottish and Irish Highers, Access to HE Diplomas, or the International Baccalaureate.
  • GCSE Requirements: Applicants will need Maths and English Language at minimum grade 4/C, or an equivalent.
  • International Qualifications: We welcome applicants with a range of qualifications which may not match those shown above.

Fees and Funding

  • UK Fee in Year 1: TBC
  • International Fee in Year 1: £34,500
  • Additional Costs: An in-date level 2 food hygiene certificate is requested for when working in the nutrition kitchen, which typically costs £20 to £30. There is a second-year core professional development and practice module and an optional third-year continual professional development module that you may choose to participate in, these may incur additional costs. For continual professional development modules, if students choose to travel further than Newcastle for placement/volunteering/continual professional development, then they will bear these travel costs; however, all activities can be completed locally. Costs can vary between approximately £25-£800 per module. In addition, students may choose to undertake additional qualifications, for example coaching qualifications, ISAK course, etc. which can vary between approximately £200 and £700.

The Department aims to give all student-athletes a first-class education within modern facilities to support your learning and professional growth. Predominantly housed in Sport Central, our facilities include an indoor 40-metre sprint track, a range of state-of-the-art sport science laboratories, and an environmental chamber that allows students and researchers to manipulate environmental conditions to mimic anywhere in the world.
