Master of Applied Arts and Humanities (Research)

The Master of Applied Arts and Humanities (Research) is a full-time or part-time course that allows students to work with highly qualified researchers with strong industry connections on a research thesis or creative project. Fields of study include communication, journalism, creative writing, culture and heritage, industrial design, visual communication design, architecture, landscape architecture, TESOL/FLT, or international studies.


About this Course

This unique and flexible degree encourages multidisciplinary research that mirrors the dynamic nature of today’s professions and aims to give students a creative edge in their future careers. As a Higher Degree by Research (HDR), this course is covered under the Australian Government's Research Training Program (RTP) funding model, which provides a fee offset for domestic students for the standard duration of the course.


Study Outcomes

Upon completing the Master of Applied Arts and Humanities (Research), students will:

Work Integrated Learning

Students will undertake a research thesis or creative project of their choosing, grounded in their professional field of expertise and based on their past experiences. Previous practical examples by students have included the development of real-world projects such as digital apps, websites, poetry books, films, novels, and music ventures.

Course-Specific Information

Applicants must have studied and/or undertaken work experience in the field in which they seek to carry out their research. This can be demonstrated by a testamur or a portfolio of work demonstrating subject matter knowledge/experience. Domestic students who are accepted on this course are provided for under the Australian Government's Research Training Program (RTP) funding model, which provides a fee offset for the standard duration of the course.

Credit Arrangements

There are currently no formal credit transfer arrangements for entry to this course. Any previous study or work experience will only be considered as part of the application process in accordance with current course rules and university policy.

The university recognizes the value of experience. Students can unlock course credit or even get direct entry into a postgraduate degree based on their prior work and study.


Course Requirements

The Master of Applied Arts & Humanities (Research) requires 48 credit points, including:


  • Required units: Applied Arts and Humanities Thesis Design PG and Research Foundations G
  • Thesis: Full-time or part-time enrollment options are available, with students required to pass 36 credit points as follows:
    • Full-time: Applied Arts and Humanities Thesis R FT
    • Part-time: Applied Arts and Humanities Thesis R PT
  • Candidates are also required to complete a Research Education Program to acquire generic skills and attributes identified as appropriate for graduates of postgraduate research programs.

Typical Study Pattern

The standard full-time study pattern involves completing the Applied Arts and Humanities Thesis Design PG and Research Foundations G in the first semester, followed by the Applied Arts and Humanities Thesis R FT over the next three semesters. The standard part-time study pattern involves completing the Research Foundations G in the first semester, the Applied Arts and Humanities Thesis Design PG in the second semester, and the Applied Arts and Humanities Thesis R PT over the next seven semesters.

  • Course duration: Standard 2 years full-time or part-time equivalent, with a maximum of 6 years from date of enrolment to date of course completion.

    • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of research principles and skills appropriate to one or more fields and creatively apply this knowledge to plan, develop, and execute a research project.
    • Demonstrate an ability to communicate with the community of researchers within the university and with the professions to create opportunities for research cooperation.
    • Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge, including recent developments, in one or more of the following fields: communication, journalism, creative writing, cultural heritage and conservation, industrial design, graphic design, architecture, landscape architecture.
