Introduction to the Master of Arts in History

The Department of History, Classics, and Religion offers a Master of Arts in History, providing students with a comprehensive education in historical research and analysis. The program is designed to accommodate students with diverse interests and backgrounds, offering a range of specializations and research areas.

Program Overview

The Master of Arts in History can be taken as a thesis-based or course-based program, both of which may be used as a qualification for application to the PhD program. Students must declare their intended program at the beginning of their graduate studies and seek approval from the Department if they wish to change their program category.

Thesis-Based Program

The thesis-based program requires students to complete a minimum of 19 units in coursework and a thesis. The coursework includes:

• Required courses (10 units)
  • HIST 602 (1 unit)
  • Any one of: HIST 603 (3 units), HIST 604 (3 units), HIST 605 (3 units), HIST 606 (3 units), HIST 609 (3 units), HIST 700 (3 units)
• Elective Courses (9 units): An additional three 3-unit graduate courses, with up to two being graduate classes other than HIST, and no more than one being HIST 699, except with approval of the Department.
• Thesis Registration in 900-level THES, requiring students to write and orally defend a thesis based on original research, normally not exceeding 100 pages in length.

Course-Based Program

The course-based program requires students to complete a minimum of 25 units, including both coursework and a Directed Research Project. The coursework includes:

• Required courses (7 units)
  • HIST 602 (1 unit)
  • Any one of: HIST 603 (3 units), HIST 604 (3 units), HIST 605 (3 units), HIST 606 (3 units), HIST 700 (3 units)
• Elective Courses (12 units): An additional four 3-unit graduate courses, with up to two being graduate classes other than HIST, and no more than two being HIST 699, except with approval of the Department.
• Directed Research Project (6 units): Students must successfully complete two consecutive registrations of 3 units in HIST 900, requiring a research paper of 40-50 pages that reflects significant use of primary materials and research.

Admission Requirements

The Department's minimum admission requirements for the MA programs in Classical Archaeology and Classical Languages include a BA with a major in Classics and an admission GPA of at least 3.5 on the 4-point scale. For the MA in Classical Archaeology, students with a major in Archaeology, Anthropology, History, or Art History may also be accepted, provided they have taken the equivalent of at least six courses in CLASS, LATIN, or GREEK at the 200-level or above.

Additional Requirements

• Applicants to the MA in Classical Archaeology must have completed the equivalent of at least 6 units of GREEK or LATIN.
• Applicants to the MA in Classical Languages must have completed the equivalent of GREEK 302 and LATIN 302 and a combined 9 units at the 400-level in GREEK and/or LATIN.
• For the PhD programs in Classical Archaeology and Classical Languages, the Department's minimum admission requirements include an MA in Classics with an admission GPA of at least 3.5 on the 4-point scale.

Language Requirement

Students must demonstrate competence in a language other than English according to the procedures specified in the Departmental Language Requirement.

Residence Requirement

The minimum period of residence for both the course-based and thesis-based programs is two four-month terms of full-time attendance at the University of Alberta.

Length of Program

The time required to complete the MA will vary according to the previous training of the applicant and the nature of the research undertaken; however, a minimum of 12 months is normally required. The maximum time to complete the thesis-based MA program is four years, and the maximum time to complete the course-based MA program is six years.

Tuition and Fees

The Department annually appoints a number of graduate research and teaching assistants. Prospective graduate students should indicate whether they wish to be considered for an assistantship at the time of application. Graduate students are encouraged to apply for national scholarships and are also eligible for various University fellowships and bursaries.

Scholarships and Financial Support

The Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies administers over $29 million each year in scholarships, awards, and financial support for graduate students, as well as financial and loan advising. Additional scholarships are available for specific faculties and programs.
