Introduction to the Medicine Program

The University of Oxford offers a comprehensive Medicine program, designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of medical science and practice. The program is divided into two main components: pre-clinical and clinical.

Course Overview

The standard Oxford medical course has separate pre-clinical and clinical components. Students first gain a comprehensive grounding in medical science, before applying that scientific foundation in the clinical setting. The course duration is 6 years, with the first 3 years focusing on pre-clinical studies and the remaining 3 years on clinical studies.

Subject Requirements

Required subjects for the program include Chemistry, with either Maths, Further Maths, Biology, or Physics. There are no recommended or helpful subjects for this program.

Other Course Requirements

Admissions tests for the program include the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT). There is no written work required for the application.

Admissions Statistics

The program has a highly competitive admissions process, with only 25% of applicants being interviewed and 9% being successful. The average intake for the program is 153 students.

About the Course

The practice of Medicine offers a breadth of experiences impossible to find in any other subject. Every day brings different patients with different needs. Its a great choice for scientists who strive to understand and apply research findings to improve the lives of the patients in their care.

Research Work

All students in the program undertake an experimental research project as part of their BA in Medical Sciences. This project offers valuable first-hand experience of scientific research and allows students to work in a laboratory from a wide range of departments within the Medical Sciences Division.

Course Structure

The program is divided into two main components: pre-clinical and clinical. The pre-clinical stage includes the First BM and the Final Honour Schools in Medical Sciences. The clinical stage includes the study of clinical medicine and the application of scientific knowledge in a clinical setting.

Terms 1-3 (First BM Part I)

Courses in this term include:

  • Organisation of the body
  • Physiology and pharmacology
  • Biochemistry and medical genetics
  • Population health 1: medical sociology
  • Year 1: Learning with Patients 1 Assessment for this term includes in-person examinations and other types of assessment.

Terms 4-5 (First BM Part II)

Courses in this term include:

  • Applied physiology and pharmacology
  • The nervous system
  • Principles of pathology
  • Psychology for medicine
  • Year 2: Learning with Patients 2 Assessment for this term includes in-person examinations and other types of assessment.

Terms 6-9 (Final Honour Schools in Medical Sciences)

Courses in this term include:

  • Eight themes across a variety of advanced options offered
  • Essay
  • Research project
  • Year 3: Learning with Patients 3 Assessment for this term includes in-person examinations, submitted work, and oral presentation of research project.
