Philosophy Program

The Department of Philosophy at Vanderbilt University introduces students to the history of philosophy and provides them with methods for analysis and reflection. Students acquire critical skills that enable them to analyze complex materials and arguments with precision and clarity. The department focuses on imparting skills that prepare students for successful lives and careers.

  • Introduction to Biomedical Ethics
    • At the intermediate and advanced level, the department offers courses about major figures in, and movements of, philosophy

Honors Program

The Honors program is a two-semester undertaking during the student's senior year, leading to Honors in Philosophy. Students plan and write a thesis in conjunction with a faculty mentor and participate in an oral defense. This program allows for sustained and close work with faculty who share academic interests with students.

The department offers students the opportunity to pursue independent study and shape their program to align with their interests. The department's curricular offerings complement interdisciplinary departments and programs, including:

  • Classical and Mediterranean Studies
  • Cinema and Media Arts The Colloquium Series regularly brings internationally renowned philosophers to Vanderbilt's campus.

After Vanderbilt

Philosophy is excellent training for law, medicine, education, and public policy. Additionally, philosophy students enter business and the public sector in increasing numbers. Alumni are currently working in government, investment banking, insurance, education, medicine, and law.
