Electrical Power Engineering FdEng

The Foundation degree in Electrical Power Engineering at Aston University is a degree-level course designed specifically for the electricity industry. This course is an IEng accredited degree programme, designed in collaboration with major electricity companies, the Sector Skills Council, and partner Further Education colleges.


Overview

The Foundation degree in Electrical Power Engineering is a work-based degree that enables students to gain specialist knowledge required to progress their career while working and earning a wage. The course has academic accreditation from the Institution of Engineers and Technology (IET), one of the worlds leading professional societies for engineers and technicians.


Course Outline and Modules

The course is delivered by Astons Professional Engineering Centre and is designed in collaboration with major electricity companies, the Sector Skills Council, and partner Further Education colleges. The specific programmes in Electrical Power Engineering that are currently offered are:


  • Power System Management
  • Transmission
  • Distribution
  • Construction Management

The first year provides an introduction to the basic knowledge and skills required by the electricity industry, and may be provided by an FE college working in partnership with Aston University. In the second year, students develop these skills to a more advanced and specialized level with modules delivered by Aston University.


Real-World Learning

Students spend most of their time doing a full-time job as well as studying for their degree part-time. Everything is structured to fit around the job and is designed in partnership with employers.


Entry Requirements

  • A relevant National Certificate or Diploma in Engineering or related subject awarded at Merit or Distinction level.
  • 2 A levels (preferably including Mathematics or Physics), with supporting GCSEs at grade C or above, including Science, Technology, or Mathematics.
  • Equivalent Scottish or overseas qualifications to those listed above.
  • If over 21, on the basis of experience or qualification deemed equivalent to those above.
  • Candidates with appropriate level 4 plus qualifications may be allowed direct year 2 entry.
  • Applicants should be in paid employment in which they can achieve the work-based learning elements of the programme.

Learning, Teaching, and Assessment

Teaching is delivered either at Aston or Inverness College for the first year. Final year teaching is held at Aston. Modules are delivered in two-week intensive blocks (approximately 13 weeks in total per year) with additional revision classes.


Modules

Year 1 provides an introduction to the basic knowledge and skills required by the electricity industry, and may be provided by an FE college working in partnership with Aston University. These modules are examples only and subject to change:


  • Business Skills for Power Engineers (EE1F21)
  • Energy Transfer and Conversion (EE1F23)
  • Electro-Mechanical Systems (EE1F24)
  • Principles of Electrical Power Engineering (EE1F25)
  • Engineering Mathematics (EE1F26)

Year 2 develops these skills to a more advanced and specialized level and is delivered by Aston University. Students will also learn through work with their employer. Modules will vary depending on the programme studied:


  • Power System Management
  • Distribution
  • Transmission

Assessment

This programme is assessed by assignments, formal lectures, tutorial classes, work-based projects, and examinations.


Fees and Scholarship

  • Home/EU: 」8,700
  • Outside EU for 2023/24: 」15,100 Tuition fees are reviewed annually and may increase in subsequent years in line with inflation linked to the Retail Price Index (RPI) to take account of the Universitys increased costs of delivering the Programme. When undertaking a placement year, a placement year fee applies.

Career Prospects

After successfully completing the Foundation degree in Power Engineering, students will have the opportunity to fast-track onto either the BEng Professional Engineering (Power Systems) or the generic BEng Professional Engineering full honors degree courses, both taught by blended distance learning. The Foundation degree in Power Engineering at Aston is an IEng accredited degree course, fulfilling the education requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer when presented with an IEng accredited Bachelor's degree.
