Education: Educational Leadership, Doctor of Philosophy

The Doctor of Philosophy in Education with a major in educational leadership is designed to develop individuals who can provide leadership to educational practice in the 21st century, whether through roles in public and private schools, colleges, and universities or by contributing to research and teaching about educational policy and practice. Core concepts in the program include systems thinking, learning theory, and research methodology.

Program Description

The program aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to lead educational institutions and organizations effectively. It focuses on the development of leadership skills, research methodologies, and analytical thinking.

Application Requirements

To be considered for graduate admission, applicants must submit all Graduate Application Requirements and additional department requirements by the published application deadlines:

• An earned masters degree or education specialist degree in administration/leadership is required in advance of admission to the program.
• A third recommendation is required by the program.

• Additional department requirements may be requested after submission of application

Admission Review and Assessment

Admission to the Doctor of Philosophy in Education with a major in educational leadership degree program is selective. Candidates for the Ph.D. in education with a major in educational leadership will be selected based on experience, especially leadership experience, as reflected in an analysis of several criteria:

• The vitae
• The content of three Recommendation for Graduate Admission forms to be solicited by the applicant
• The candidates graduate grade-point average as reported on official transcripts
• A goal statement
• The writing sample requested by the department following submission of application materials to the graduate admissions office
• An interview with the department may be requested.

Degree Requirements

The Doctor of Philosophy in education with a major in educational leadership degree requires a minimum of 76 credits beyond the masters degree: 12 credits in the foundation core; 20 credits in the department core; 28 credits in the cognate; and a minimum of 16 credits for the dissertation.

a. Foundation Core (12 credits)

• Required courses:
  • ED 9940 - Doctoral Professional Seminar I (2 credits)
  • ED 9941 - Doctoral Professional Seminar II (2 credits)
  • ED 9010 - Research Methodology (4 credits)
  • ED 9020 - Analytical Methods (4 credits)

b. Department Core (20 credits)

• Required courses:
  • ED 9930 - Field-Based Mentorship Issues I (2 credits)
  • ED 9931 - Field-Based Mentorship Issues II (2 credits)
  • ED 9100 - Leadership Research Issues and Proposal Development (4 credits)
  • Choose three courses from the following:
    • ED 8410 - Philosophical and Ethical Issues of Organizational Leadership (4 credits)
    • ED 8420 - Advanced Politics and Policy in Organizational Leadership (4 credits)
    • ED 8430 - Promoting Diversity and Social Justice in Organizations (4 credits)
    • ED 8440 - Organizational and Adult Learning Theories and Building Professional Capital (4 credits)
    • ED 8450 - Motivation, Change and Innovation for Organizational Leadership (4 credits)
    • ED 8460 - Principles of Organizational Leadership (4 credits)

c. Cognate Requirement (28 credits)

Those students admitted with a master's degree will select a structured cognate program approved by their advisor or they may, in cooperation with their advisor, design a cognate that draws from courses offered within the School of Education and Human Services and by other schools within the university.

d. Dissertation (16 credits)

• ED 9999 - Dissertation Research (1 to 16 credits)
• ED 9900 - Topics in Advanced Methodology (1 to 4 credits)
• ED 9942 - Doctoral Writing Seminar in Educational Leadership (4 to 12 credits)

Satisfactory Academic Progress

Satisfactory academic progress (SAP) is the term used to denote a students successful completion of coursework toward a certificate or degree. Federal regulations require the Office of Financial Aid to monitor Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) for all financial aid recipients.

Good Academic Standing

All graduate students are expected to remain in good academic standing throughout the entire course of their graduate program. To be in good academic standing, a graduate student must make satisfactory progress toward fulfilling degree requirements, including the completion of critical degree milestones as set forth by the applicable program and maintain a minimum semester and overall GPA of 3.0.

Academic Advising

Upon acceptance into the program, the Ph.D. program coordinator will assign an initial adviser. Students who must complete a cognate will be assigned to a program adviser to assist in planning a cognate course of study. Each student will seek a dissertation chairperson after completion of all coursework.

Plan of Study

All accepted applicants, in consultation with their assigned faculty program adviser, must develop a plan of study that details specific courses the students will use to satisfy their degree requirements.

Residency

Students must complete a residency for the purpose of concentrating study and fostering close and continuous contact with faculty, fellow graduate students, and other professionals.

Continuous Enrollment

The continuous enrollment policy for doctoral students requires continuous registration of graduate students for at least 1 credit each semester in the academic year to maintain an active graduate student status.

Time to Degree

The maximum time limit for completing a Ph.D. degree is no more than ten years from the term of the first course enrollment in the doctoral program.
