Introduction to Sport Coaching BSc(Hons)

The Sport Coaching BSc(Hons) degree at the University of Brighton is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience necessary to succeed in the sport coaching profession. Endorsed by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA), this course provides a comprehensive education in sport coaching, covering topics such as physiology, psychology, biomechanics, training principles, sport development, and sociology.


Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the Sport Coaching BSc(Hons) course, applicants must meet the following entry requirements:


  • A-levels or BTEC: Entry requirements are in the range of A-level BBBBCC (120104 UCAS Tariff points) or BTEC Extended Diploma DDMDMM.
  • International Baccalaureate: 30 points, including three subjects at Higher level.
  • Access to HE Diploma: Pass with 60 credits overall. At least 45 credits at level 3, with 24 credits at distinction and 21 credits at merit or above.
  • T-level: Merit in the health, healthcare science or science T-level. Other T-levels are not accepted.
  • English language requirements: IELTS 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each element.

Course Structure

The course is structured to provide a broad introduction to coaching in the first year, with the option to specialize in one of three areas in the second and third years: development, performance, or youth sport and physical education. The course includes a range of modules, such as:

  • Sport, the Body and Society
  • Fundamentals of Coaching
  • Practical Application of Coaching
  • The Scientific Study of Sport and Exercise

Year 2 Modules

  • Coaching Contexts and Methodologies
  • Coaching Professional Practice
  • Data Analysis and Research Methods
  • Contemporary Issues in Sport Coaching
  • Option modules, such as Power and Politics in Sport, Leading and Managing People in Sports Organisations, and Primary Physical Education: Theory and practice of teaching KS1 and KS2 PE

Final Year Modules

  • Coaching Professional Enquiry
  • Dissertation
  • Critical Perspectives in Sport Coaching
  • Option modules, such as Physical Education in the 1416 curriculum, Education Studies 3: Inclusive Practice, and Community Sport Development: Policy and Practice

Specialization Options

At the end of the first year, students can choose to specialize in one of the following areas:


  • Sport Coaching with Development BSc(Hons)
  • Sport Coaching with Performance BSc(Hons)
  • Sport Coaching with Youth Sport and Physical Education BSc(Hons)
