Certificate in Foundation Studies in Health Sciences (Nursing)
The Certificate in Foundation Studies Programme will provide students with the knowledge, personal and inter-personal skills, and organisational framework upon which to base their future undergraduate nursing studies. The primary aim of the course is to provide students with the knowledge base, transferable skills, linguistic skills, and general competence to allow them to progress successfully onto the University of Malta's undergraduate Nursing course.
Course Overview
- The course has been planned to offer specific training and support in core areas where further assistance is required.
- The programme is governed by the Certificate in Foundation Studies Course Regulations, 2014, under the auspices of the International School for Foundation Studies.
Eligibility and Admission Criteria
- The Course shall be open to all applicants who present a secondary and/or high school certificate issued abroad and who studied within an educational system that is not comparable to the Maltese educational system.
- Applicants must satisfy the University's English language requirement.
- Applicants must be in possession of qualifications allowing access to an undergraduate course in the selected discipline in the country where such qualifications originate, but are deemed to require further study to be admitted to undergraduate degree courses at the University of Malta.
- The Health Sciences programme is open only to qualified applicants from non-EU/EEA countries in terms of agreements signed by the University with the State of Kuwait, the Sultanate of Oman, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and to qualified nationals from other non-EU/EEA countries.
- At the discretion of the Board, applicants may be required to pass an interview and/or a written test.
Study Programme
- The programme is full-time and lasts for 1 year, consisting of 62 ECTS.
- The course includes compulsory units such as:
- Research and Reasoning
- Medical and Academic English Reading, Listening, and Writing
- Grammar and Medical Terminology
- Medical Maltese
- Foundations of Chemistry and Biochemistry
- Introduction to Psychology
- Physiology and Anatomy Related to Care Delivery
- Health and Wellness
- Academic Searching, Reading, and Writing in the Health Sciences
- Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Skills
- Social Responsibility in Nursing
- Use of Information Technology in Health Care
Learning Outcomes
- By the end of the course, students will be able to describe basic concepts in human anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry, and explain how these principles can be applied in therapeutics in patient care delivery.
- Students will be able to describe the appropriate actions in serious incidents and those involving multiple casualties.
- Students will grasp the foundations of reflective practice and be able to calculate appropriate dosages, drug concentrations, and pH of solutions.
- Students will be able to assess an emergency situation quickly and calmly and administer appropriate care for life-threatening injuries.
- Students will be able to conduct a search for scientific literature related to evidence in nursing practice.
Fees
- Total Tuition Fees for non-EU applicants: Eur 6,600.
Career Prospects
- As a certificate holder, students will be eligible to join the B.Sc. (Hons) Nursing at the University of Malta.
