Master of Arts/Postgraduate Diploma in Chinese Language and Literature

The Master of Arts/Postgraduate Diploma in Chinese Language and Literature is a taught postgraduate program offered by the Faculty of Humanities. The program aims to equip students with knowledge of Chinese language, literature, and culture, as well as the skills necessary for teaching Chinese.

Programme Structure

The program includes 5 compulsory subjects and a number of elective subjects. Students have to take at least 1 elective subject from the Chinese Language Block and 1 elective subject from the Chinese Literature Block.

• MACLL students are required to take 10 subjects (30 credits), of which 5 must be compulsory subjects and the remaining 5 elective subjects.
• PgDCLL students are required to take 7 subjects (21 credits), of which 5 must be compulsory subjects and the remaining 2 elective subjects.

Programme Aims

The program aims to help students acquire knowledge of Chinese language, literature, and culture, as well as the skills necessary for teaching Chinese. The program is designed to equip students with professional skills, including:

• The ability to present complex ideas clearly and articulately in appropriate forms of Chinese
• The ability to assimilate and analyze complex information in different genres or registers of classical or contemporary Chinese
• The ability to use reference books and information technology to obtain information needed for Chinese teaching and learning
• The ability to appreciate and analyze works in Chinese literature
• The ability to discover, analyze, and handle issues in Chinese language teaching and testing
• The ability to analyze Chinese cultural tradition

Recognition and Prospects

The MACLL and the PgDCLL are listed by the Education Bureau as a Recognised Language Major Degree Programme (Chinese Language) and an Approved Post-graduate Programme in Subject Knowledge (PGSK) for Chinese Language Teachers, respectively. After graduation, students can engage in related occupations such as teachers, editors, etc.

Entrance Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree from a recognized institution
• Applicants may be required to take entry tests and/or attend interviews
• If you are not a native speaker of English, and your Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification is awarded by institutions where the medium of instruction is not English, you are expected to fulfill the Universitys minimum English language requirement for admission purpose

Medium of Instruction

The medium of instruction of the program is Chinese and English. Students should have some basic ability to understand spoken Cantonese (as some compulsory subjects and electives are taught in Cantonese).

Remarks

Starting from the 2024/25 cohort, students are required to complete the compulsory 1-credit subject CBS5T01 Professional Ethics and Academic Integrity to satisfy the Academic Integrity and Ethics (AIE) requirement for graduation. No credit fee will be charged for this subject.
