Program Overview
The Certificat de formation continue universitaire (CAS) in Psychosomatic and Psychosocial Medicine is a comprehensive program designed for medical professionals interested in the relational and biopsychosocial aspects of patient care.
Objectives
- Develop knowledge: Familiarize participants with the theoretical framework of the biopsychosocial approach.
- Develop skills: Teach participants to manage functional disorders and common psychopathology in somatic medicine.
- Develop personal awareness: Help participants identify and manage their personal involvement in the care process.
Target Audience
The program is tailored for medical professionals, particularly those interested in the relational and biopsychosocial complexity of patient care.
Competences
Upon completion of the program, participants will be able to:
- Improve their communication skills with patients, making them more at ease in difficult relationships.
- More easily diagnose mental health issues, accompany patients, or effectively refer them to other professionals in the psychosocial network.
- Identify and manage functional disorders.
- Better assist patients in managing psychosocial adaptation difficulties in the context of chronic diseases.
- Recognize their own feelings through introspection and supervision.
- Experiment with psychocorporeal approaches to better prescribe them to patients.
Program Structure
The program spans over 5 semesters, with the following structure:
- First Year: Focus on the therapeutic relationship in specific situations, including managing difficult interviews and helping patients cope with biopsychosocial adaptation during chronic illnesses or other challenging life situations.
- Second Year: Delve into psychopathology in somatic medicine, including detection, diagnosis, and evaluation of main psychiatric disorders, and introduce four essential psychotherapeutic approaches.
- Supervision: 48 hours of individual or group supervision (maximum 6 participants) over the 5 semesters, required for obtaining the certificate.
Teaching Methods
The teaching approach is interactive, tailored to the needs of medical practitioners from various specialties. It includes:
- Small group work.
- Personal experience integration.
- Interactive conferences.
- Theoretical introductions.
Evaluation
Evaluation includes:
- Active and regular participation.
- A personal project developed during the fifth semester, focusing on the process of personal change, which is subject to written and oral evaluation.
Diploma
The CAS in Psychosomatic and Psychosocial Medicine is awarded jointly by the Universities of Geneva, Lausanne, and Fribourg upon successful completion of the program.
Partnerships
The program is a collaboration between the Universities of Geneva, Lausanne, and Fribourg, with the support of the Institute of Psychosomatic and Psychosocial Medicine of the Romandy (IMPPRo).
Accreditation
The CAS is recognized by the Swiss Academy of Psychosomatic and Psychosocial Medicine (ASMPP) for the attestation of advanced interdisciplinary training (FAI), and by the Swiss Society of General Internal Medicine (SSMIG) for continuing education.
Duration and Credits
- The program lasts from October 2026 to December 2028.
- It awards 10 ECTS credits.
- The program consists of 160 hours of face-to-face teaching over 14 days, spread across 5 semesters.
