Introduction to Classical Archaeology

The Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Classical Archaeology: An Introduction is a program designed to initiate participants into the classical cultures of Greece and Rome, and to understand the influence of classical archaeology on European thought from the 16th century onwards.

Objectives

• Recognize the influences of Greek and Roman civilizations in architecture, iconography, art, and everyday objects.
• Develop sensitivity to the interpretation and structuring of archaeological data.
• Acquire basic knowledge of the history of ancient art.
• Develop observational, descriptive, and analytical skills transferable to professional practice.
• Understand the historical and cultural evolution to better situate current societal issues.

Target Audience

• Active professionals in cultural or artistic fields, or those interested in acquiring tools, knowledge, and skills in classical archaeology.
• Anyone interested in classical cultures.

Competencies

• Recognize the influences of Greek and Roman civilizations in modern architecture, iconography, art, and objects.
• Explain why and how these elements were produced and are found where they are today.
• Analyze through observation.
• Interpret and structure archaeological data.
• Know the methods of dating and the basics of the chronology of the ancient and modern world.
• Situate current societal issues with an understanding of historical and cultural evolution.
• Enrich professional practices with knowledge of classical cultures.

Program Structure

The CAS consists of 3 modules, each lasting 12 weeks, spread over 3 semesters, totaling 12 ECTS credits.

• Each module includes 3 days of in-person teaching and 12 weeks of distance learning, including courses, documentary resources, activities, formative assessments, group work, and personalized tutoring.
• A personal and collaborative work is required from each participant.

Modules

1. Archaeology, a Science of the Past? A Reflection for the Modern World
   • Dates: 21 February 2025, 4 April 2025, 16 May 2025
   • Location: Geneva
   • Price: CHF 1,450
   • Description: Discover the cultural roots of the present by exploring the past, sensitize yourself to the interpretation and structuring of archaeological data, and conduct a logical and methodological reflection.
2. From Troy to Alexandria. Art and Archaeology of the Greek World
   • Dates: 19 September 2025, 31 October 2025, 12 December 2025
   • Location: Geneva
   • Price: CHF 1,450
   • Description: Discover the architecture, art, and craftsmanship of ancient Greece, know and interpret archaeological data, and conduct a logical and methodological reflection.
3. From Rome to Constantinople. Art and Archaeology of the Roman World
   • Dates: 6 March 2026, 17 April 2026, 29 May 2026
   • Location: Geneva
   • Price: CHF 1,450
   • Description: Discover the architecture, art, and sites of the ancient Roman world, know and interpret archaeological data, and conduct a logical and methodological reflection.

Teaching Methods

The CAS includes 3 modules, each with 12 weeks of mixed teaching: 3 in-person days and 12 weeks of distance learning, including courses, resources, activities, assessments, group work, and personalized tutoring. The formation combines knowledge and new learning technologies, providing access to archaeological resources, guided visits, and conferences. It favors individual learning and dynamic interactions between participants and instructors.

Evaluation

Each module is subject to an evaluation including works to be submitted during the 12 weeks of the course and a final written or oral work (4 ECTS credits per module).

Admission Criteria

Candidates for the Certificate must:

• Hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree from a university, a Bachelor or Master from a University of Applied Sciences (HES) or a University of Teacher Education (HEP), or a title deemed equivalent.
• State their motivations for following the program.

The Steering Committee reserves the right to accept the application of persons who do not meet the requirements stated above, upon examination of their dossier. An interview may complement the admission procedure.

Tuition Fees

• Total: CHF 4,200
• Per module with evaluation and ECTS credits: CHF 1,450
• Per module without ECTS credits (certificate of attendance provided upon request): CHF 1,200

Teaching Hours

• In-person teaching: 72 hours
• Online teaching: 63 hours

Schedule

For each module, 3 in-person days from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM and 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM.

Certificate

The Certificate of Advanced Studies in Classical Archaeology: An Introduction is awarded by the Faculty of Letters of the University of Geneva to participants who have satisfied the knowledge control conditions of the modules and the final study work.
