Introduction to the Confucius China Studies Program
The Confucius China Studies Program is a comprehensive initiative designed to foster deeper understanding and cooperation between China and the international community. This program encompasses various fellowships and grants aimed at promoting research, education, and cultural exchange.
Understanding China Fellowship
The Understanding China Fellowship is a key component of the Confucius China Studies Program, divided into three primary categories:
I. Understanding China Visiting Scholar to China
- Purpose and Eligibility: This program supports teachers, researchers, postdoctoral scholars with the credential of assistant professor (or equivalent) and above from foreign universities and academic institutes to undertake research with Chinese researchers in China. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens.
- Duration: The fellowship duration ranges from two weeks to six months.
- Application Materials:
- An invitation letter from a Chinese university
- Summary of academic publications
- A research statement for the visit
- Passport information
- Priority is given to applicants who obtain a letter of recommendation from local Confucius Institutes, or the Chinese Embassy (Consulate) in their country
- How to Apply: Applicants must log in on the designated platform, download and fill in the application form, sign it before scanning it and sending it, and then post the application forms and other supporting documents required (both Chinese and English versions) in one packet to the Confucius Institute Headquarters.
- Assessment: Applicants will undergo a correspondence review from the expert panel of the Confucius China Studies Program.
- Funding:
- 10,000 RMB per month
- Round-trip international airfare (economy class, to be reimbursed against actual cost)
- Life insurance during the visit term in China (purchased by Hanban, reimbursement not applicable)
- Schedule: After a 3-month expert review, admitted applicants will receive a Notice of Funding from the Confucius Institute Headquarters.
II. Understanding China Short-term Visit
- Purpose: This program serves to support senior officials from government, education, culture, non-governmental organizations, and business.
- Duration: The visit can last from two weeks to two months.
- Application Materials:
- Achievements and rewards
- A statement of purpose for the visit
- Passport information
- Priority is given to applicants who obtain a letter of recommendation from local Confucius Institutes, or the Chinese Embassy (Consulate) in their country
- How to Apply: Similar to the Visiting Scholar program, with applicants logging in on the designated platform, downloading and filling in the application form, and submitting required documents.
- Assessment: Applicants will have a correspondence review from the expert panel of the Confucius China Studies Program.
- Funding:
- Accommodation and travel expenses in China
- Round-trip international airfare (economy class, to be reimbursed against actual cost)
- Life insurance during the visit term in China (provided, reimbursement not applicable)
- Schedule: After passing a correspondence review, admitted applicants will receive a Notice of Funding from the Confucius Institute Headquarters.
III. Understanding China Chinese Visiting Scholar
- Purpose and Eligibility: This program supports Chinese senior scholars to give credit courses on Chinese economics, business, finance, law, and culture, etc., in foreign universities. Scholars are expected to give lectures at Confucius Institutes in the host country or neighboring countries.
- Duration: The duration can range from 6 to 12 months, with the possibility of extension based on the host countrys request and performance evaluation.

- How to Apply: Applicants log in on the designated platform, download and fill in the application form, and submit required documents. The Headquarters selects applicants from the candidates pool or recruits new candidates as requested.
- Funding:
- Scholars are paid according to the standard of Government-sponsored teachers
- An extra research grant may be given to the scholar when needed
The Confucius China Studies Program, through its various components, aims to enhance mutual understanding, facilitate academic and cultural exchange, and foster long-term collaborations between China and the global community.
