Introduction to the Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA)

The Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) is a widely recognized qualification for those entering the field of teaching English as a foreign language. It focuses on developing practical teaching techniques, providing individuals with the skills needed to begin a career teaching English as a foreign language and making it easier to find work in a language school.

Course Overview

The CELTA course is very practical in nature, with a heavy emphasis placed on performance in observed and assessed teaching practice sessions. Candidates teach six hours of assessed lessons over eight to nine lessons, with teaching practice completed at two different levels and candidates teaching volunteer groups of students. Assessment is based on overall performance at the end of the 6 hours.

Course Structure

• Face-to-Face Full-time: 4 weeks, Monday to Friday, 8:30am - 4:30pm
• Face-to-Face Part-time: 10 weeks, Monday 5 - 8pm, Tuesday and Thursday 5 - 9pm, and four Saturdays 9am - 4pm

Assessment

There are two components of assessment:

1. Teaching Practice: Candidates teach for a total of 6 hours, working with adult classes at a minimum of two levels of ability. Assessment is based on overall performance.
2. Written Assignments: Candidates complete four written assignments (each 7501,000 words), focusing on:

• Analysing and responding to adult learner needs
• Analysing language for teaching purposes
• Teaching language skills
• Reflecting on classroom teaching

Grades

There are four possible grades for CELTA:

• Pass A
• Pass B
• Pass
• Fail

  • Monday 17 November - Friday 12 December (4 weeks full-time)
• 2025 Course Fee: $3,800
• 2026 Course Dates:
  • Saturday 11 April - Thursday 18 June (10 weeks part-time)
  • Monday 16 November - Friday 11 December (4 weeks full-time)
• 2026 Course Fee: $3,900

Insurance for International Students

All international students are required to have approved insurance while studying in New Zealand. International students will be charged automatically one of the amounts below for insurance upon enrolment.

• 2025 Insurance Fee: $113 per month
• 2026 Insurance Fee: $115 per month

Entry Requirements

Candidates can register for this course if they:

• Have a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education
• Are 20 or over
• Have a CEFR level high C1 (Advanced) or above, which will enable them to teach at a range of levels
• If candidates do not have formal qualifications at this level but can demonstrate that they would be likely to complete the course successfully, they may still be accepted.
• At the course organiser's discretion, applicants aged between 18 and 20 may on occasion be accepted.

Application Procedure

To apply, candidates should download the application form and language awareness task, complete them, and then email them to the English Language Academy. If this stage of the application is successful, candidates will be invited for an interview at a mutually convenient time. The deadline for all stages of the application procedure for the CELTA course is usually four weeks before the course starts.

Support

The English Language Academy provides support throughout the course, including a session on finding work both in New Zealand and overseas. Before the CELTA course, the Student Support Team sends a welcome pack with important information and materials needed for the course. An IT workshop is also held to help with any technical issues. Trainers keep track of candidates' progress and provide individual support throughout the course. At the end of the course, there is also a session on finding work, and the academy shares work opportunities from schools in New Zealand and overseas, providing guidance in CV preparation and job interviews.
