Frenulotomy Program

Overview

The Frenulotomy program is designed to prepare practitioners with the knowledge and skills necessary to assess, diagnose, and divide Ankyloglossia (Tongue Tie) in babies to restore tongue function and facilitate effective infant feeding.

What You'll Study

This course provides theoretical and evidence-based theory underpinning contemporary practice to develop advanced techniques in tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) management. It prepares practitioners to practice safely and effectively as a tongue-tie practitioner.

• The program reflects a student-centered approach with emphasis on active learning, evidence-based practice, reflection, and critical thinking.
• Successful completion of the module will extend the role of the health professional, enabling them to become a competent tongue-tie practitioner.

How You'll Study

This module is delivered using a blended approach, with one mandatory face-to-face teaching day, followed by a series of monthly online sessions.

Duration of the Module

The course takes approximately 12 months to complete on a part-time basis.

Assessments

Clinical practice will be supervised by a competent frenotomy practitioner who is deemed competent in the organization the practitioners are employed.

• During the 12 months, students must complete all the competencies in the practice assessment document associated with ankyloglossia management and frenulotomy.
• Students must complete at least 20 full assessments of tongue-tie (including infant feeding) and frenulotomies in clinical practice.
• Students will perform the practical aspects of the assessment, diagnosis, and division of Ankyloglossia in clinical practice.
• Students will be supported to develop their knowledge and skills in the actual clinical setting in preparation for safe and effective practice of frenotomy.

Entry Requirements

It is essential that all applicants have a basic level of training in relation to infant feeding and are currently supporting families with infant feeding.

• Applicants must have appropriate indemnity arrangements in place relevant to their scope of practice.
• Applicants must have access to an assessor in clinical practice who is deemed experienced and competent in frenotomy.

Fees & Funding

The tuition fee for the 20-credit module is Ł1,461.

The program features expert-led teaching by clinicians and International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants.

The program offers flexible learning through online seminars and one face-to-face study day.

Practice-Based Assessment

The program includes practice-based assessment, with 20 supervised frenulotomies and clinical competencies.

The program is based at a modern health campus with Ł28 million facilities, including mock operating theaters, wards, and ICU.
